Hi there,
In the last few months I have been back and forth at the vet as my greyhound will have a very gurgly stomach which follows with diarrhea with particles of blood in it. The first time this happened I took him to ER and he was treated with a three day antibiotic (I've forgotten the name of it) and he seemed to clear up but only for 3-4 weeks. His next episode was very similar with the gurgling stomach and then explosive diarrhea with blood again. I took a stool sample in which was sent for analysis which showed positive for Campylobacter jejuni (DNA) and Clostridium perfringens (DNA). The vet prescribed Ampicillin, 2 tabs per day for 14 days and Metronidazole, 6 tabs per day for 7 days. I also put him on Royal Canin Gastro VET PRESCRIBED food (dry and wet) which he continues to be on. I waited for 2 weeks after he had finished this treatment and all along he was doing extremely well and his stools were "Prize Poops". I then sent in another stool analysis (DNA) to see if the bacteria had cleared up and it came back that he still had the same two bacterial strains as above, nothing had changed. He also had another relapse of gurgling stomach followed by diarrhea with blood in it again approximately 2.5 weeks after finishing this treatment. He then went on Clavaseptin 2 tabs a day for 2 weeks, probiotics in his food and continued on the Royal Canin Gastro VET PRESCRIBED food and again, has done famously on this with "prize poops" again. He completed the antibiotic treatment two days ago as well as the probiotics. This morning he woke up and his tummy was gurgling again, I took him out and he deposited a "prize poop" and so I'm not sure how he will be when I get home from work and I'm hoping this is not yet again another relapse. I might be jumping here but with the above history, I'm worried that this is a pattern.
I have ordered more probiotics so that I can keep him on those to see if this makes a difference.
If this is a food allergy which I don't think it is because while on the antibiotics he does very well with this food in that his stools are firm and formed, and if he was allergic, wouldn't he be having a problem with this even with being on the antibiotics? I don't think antibiotics treat digestive/stomach allergies.
Maybe it could be inflammatory bowel disease or collitis. If that's the case, would he need to go on steroids for his lifetime? It's quite frustrating to pinpoint.
Meanwhile my greyhound seems very well in that he is not lethargic when he has these relapses but his stools can be quite alarming.
Has anyone else had any experience with this? I would love to hear if you have and if there are any magic answers/advice out there.
Thank you!
