Hi there! I live with my husband and my greyhound, Bella in a little apartment. Bella has a standard greyhound size wire crate (i.e. huge!), which is not the collapsible/easy fold type (it looks exactly like the one in the photo). My apartment is small and so I would like to be able to cover the crate up when not in use. Bella only goes in there when my husband and I are not home. I've thought of getting a piece of plywood cut to size to put on top of the crate and to get a cover sewn for it (with sides that can be rolled up so that Bella can see out of her crate on all sides) and I plan to put a record player on top of the crate along with a few decorative things. When not in use, I was hoping to be able to use it as a buffet table for when guests come over to dinner. However, I'm not sure if the crate will be able to handle the weight and come crashing down on Bella when we are not home, or have dishes of food come crashing down when she's not in the crate either. Has anyone here converted their wire crate into a table top, and could advise me if this is a good idea or not? Thank you so much! Nirmie Attachments:

I wouldn't imagine a crate could hold that much weight reliably. They also wobble quite a bit when the dogs hit the sides, I wouldn't trust it.

I use the tops of my crates for storage of things like towels, dog toys, and so on. I also pile my (ready to recycle) newspapers on top. Crates--even foldable ones--can hold a lot of weight. But they can be a bit wobbly, as Midge said, and they do tend to sag in the centre if the weight is heavy. The plywood will help if it goes right to the sides.

I just tried pushing down on the top of my crate, it does sag but you're right, perhaps plywood going all the way to the sides will help as the sides do seem very sturdy. Maybe I will skip using it as a buffet table and just keep some lighter items on top of the crate. Thanks again for your input, both of you!

Just a thought... could you extend the board a bit over the edges of the crate and add thin legs at four corners? They could possibly screw on bottom of your plywood to create a 'table'. That would really stabilize things, and then there would be no risk of collapse. When your side cover is rolled down you would never know they are there. By-the-way... brilliant way to economize on space
