Our eight yr. old grey (soon to be 9) developed a limp only a few days after bringing her home (at 2 1/2) and it has been with her off and on over the years. It sometimes is a lot more noticeable than others and also depending on the time of the year or weather which seems to point to arthritis of some sort?
Years ago our first vet simply put it down to a 'racing injury' since she was a racer, then a visit to the niagara animal clinic a few years later where the vet took x-rays of hips just to check and that showed nothing. Our current vet has also put it down to just a damaged tendon or race injury. I contacted the race kennel in the u.s. where she was born and they had no record of any race injury for her? Have tried some meds to combat inflamation but that didn't seem to do anything. I've noticed after lying for a long time on that leg when she gets up then she's actually 'hobbling' on it, then it seems to wear off a bit. She never seems to let it bother her, has never showed any signs of pain and wants go for long walks and likes to run now and then (the first vet recommended shorter walks). It's quite noticeable sometimes as her rear 'hock' area down to the paw seems to sit alot lower then it should from joint to paw (as if she has weakness or lack of strength to hold it up). Also she holds her paw in a 'claw' like stance when walking and seems to 'carry' that leg when running.
Now she seems to have a bit of a limp in her front leg, she has also had trouble with corns (tried all the meds! but they seem to return) but she did slip coming down the stairs the other day and ow I'm wondering if that's the cause. She never yelped or anything but just a slip of the leg down one step? Theh last few days she is having difficulty getting up the stairs, she'll make attempts but back off. I've actually carried her up a few times.
She also has a 'lump' of what the vet said is just cartlidge on one of her rear paw knuckles....but it has gotten larger over the last few years?
Just not quite sure what to do? Hate to visit the vet again as he only seems to focus on 'inflammation'? She has been running alot this year around the yard so I'm wondering if all this is just that she has either done more 'damage' to the tendon or has exacerbated the condition?
Wondering if what she needs is one of the 'brace' type wraps for support I've seen online? Any input?
Thanks
