i'm wondering if any of you can help me with this - sunny is wandering around the house tonight, just crying and crying - i have had him out for 3 walks in the past 2 hours so he doesn't need that - he seems to be feeling fine - no D or anything - no fever - he's just restless and crying - really crying - now, he does usually start to whimper off and on during the evenings, but tonight even more so - thankfully, he's settled now - i put a quilt on the floor beside me at the computer - but if i get up, to watch tv or go to the kitchen, he starts again - any ideas what's going on??? - like i mentioned - he does tend to cry at night, but tonight is especially "bad" - janis

How was Sunny last night?
Is he tender anywhere (does he arch up or wince when you apply any pressure to his abdomen?)? Is he eating and drinking normally? Is he going potty normally?
I think he might need to see a vet to determine if this is just an arthritis flare or if it's something else. Have you discussed with your vet about his crying at night? That would concern me quite a bit since greys tend to be very quiet and very stoic.

hi jen - thanks for your concern - sunny is fine today - not tender anywhere - he just finished his breakfast (and wanted more!) - normal potty - wagging his tail - he just seems to be extremely "needy" - more so in the evenings - cry and cry - not howling - just really loud whimpering - he settles fine overnight - right now he is on the floor beside me and he's really quite content - do you think he could just be anxious? - like separation anxiety? - someone is in the house with the dogs about 90% of the time - and none of them are destructive in any way at all - and the only messes we have are when we fail to acknowledge that they want to go out or we have left them alone for a bit too long - ideas?

I may sound like a broken record now, but have you tried anything like rescue remedy or bio-calm? I wish I could help.

If you are home, I doubt it would be SA. I would wonder if maybe his sight isn't what it used to be and at night, he's having trouble seeing. It's really hard to say why he'd be whimpering at night.

Another vote for trying Rescue Remedy or Animal Rescue, just to see if it helps.

Could he be cold? My house seems cooler in the evenings, even though the thermostat is the same.
Perhaps you could put a t-shirt on him, or borrow some jammies, and see if that helps. Or, if he will lie down, put a flannel sheet (doubled up) or fleece blanket on him. He might be OK near the computer because of the heat it generates.

Earl does the same thing - usually because he wants attention. If I am sitting in the same room as him he is fine. But, if I go to another room he will get up and whine. Even if I go to another room where he can see me he gets upset and will whine. If I go back to the same room as him - he stops! When he comes in from his last walk he starts whining as soon as he gets in the door. As soon as he has eaten his last meal of the day (after the 10:00pm walk), he will lie down for 5-10 minutes and then stand up and whine cause it's bedtime. lol I don't know about Sunny but Earl is spoiled! Isn't that what we got them for Liz
