It was 2 years ago today (December 27th) that we packed our 2 kids (Noah and Elsa) and our Labrador (Cedar) into the car to meet some greyhounds at GRA. We were greeted by Bill when we got there and we told him we were there to look at the handsome red boy Walker. We took a glance at Walker but never even got him out of his cage as a sweet mousy faced grey kept locking eyes with me. We took Coach James out of his crate and he immediately leaned against me and looked up at me just as my lovey Doberman used to do...I was convinced that this was the boy for us...but would the kids and husband agree? Of course it was unanimous as even Cedar got along with him and Bill thought he would be fine with our house cat. We walked him for a bit while he emptied his bladder before the car ride but amazingly he had just enough left to pee in the back of the van as soon as he jumped in...what a start. On the way home many names were considered as James is a nephew of ours, our son Noah decided that since he was skinny and sweet like the elf, Lanny, in Prep and Landing (a Christmas cartoon) it was decided that Lanny was his new name and he learned to respond to his new name quickly. The next two days were interesting as we learned that he could open his crate and he enjoyed marking his new territory while we were out on a short errand run...that was also the time he really met Sally cat, from the evidence in the house she won the fight and Lanny would not even look her in the eye after...no marks on either but it was clear that Sally was the boss. Two years later when we ask where his cat is he will go to her and sniff her all over and then come back for some praise, she has grown to tolerate him but still enjoys the fact that she is the boss! Lanny has added so much joy to our lives and watching him gain more confidence has been a pleasure for all of us. Lanny loves to greet the kids with hugs and kisses when they get off the bus and he loves to go for adventures with them, he walks so nice on a leash for them even though they are half his weight. He has learned to sit, lay down, speak, shake a paw, bow (one of his favourites) and recently he has started to learn how to smile. He is not a show off and only performs when there is no audience, but we know how clever he is and that is all he cares about. He has been a delight to have as a member of our family and we wouldn't have it any other way. I will post some pictures when I am at a computer that will allow me to do so. He has had a great year of camping and fall fairs and just hanging out being loved by all who meets him.

What a beautiful tribute to your boy Lanny on his 2nd Gotcha Day. Isn't it just amazing how these gracious pups just steal your heart with only a glance. Lanny, Happy 2nd Gotcha Day and many, many more to come.

Lovely story of your meeting, and of Lanny's two years with you! Thank you so much for sharing... warms my heart each time I read of how a greyhound has made himself known as being 'yours' from the first glance, and then has gone on to bring such love and joy to each and every day thereafter.
Happy Gotcha Day Lanny!!

I remember the posts about Coach James (now Lanny) from the person that knew him from the kennel in the States hoping he would find the perfect forever home. It was clear that they felt he was a very special boy and it is clear that he has proven himself to be your special boy and that he is in the absolute BEST forever home he could have ever hoped for.
I have only met Lanny at two GRA picnics but I fell in love with him in that short time. He truly is a special soul.
Happy Second Gotcha Day to one and all!!!!

Such a beautiful tribute to your sweet Lanny. He certainly knew what he wanted in his Forever Family right from the start and I bet it didn't take him long to fit right in as a family member. Love how he greets the kids coming off the school bus ... that is just so neat. Happy 2nd Gotcha Day sweetie ....
