what's so funny Light?....Joker!

This may seem like a really silly inquiry, but I have been really curious for some time if anyone else has noted this. Before we got Joker, Light was quite ladylike with her potty time. Typical female squat and go. Since we have added Joker (1 1/2 years) Light has tried to gradually adopt his very masculine technique. She does this rather ridiculous leg lift while in a semi-squat and tries to aim for hydrants and trees and the like. Really very awkward and must say quite hilarious. Lately she has again gone further to add Joker's rather dramatic post-pee scuff. However she does not know how to coordinate her energy and the attempt, so it comes out like a rev-up and bolt. I can only laugh (inwardly) as I'm sure she is quite proud of her accomplishments. I must say that these pups add so many smiles to each and every day.... sometimes in the most unusual ways!

Our first two pups, Bonnie and Jack, were bounces and had been in a home together before they adopted us. Bonnie did this exact same thing that you are describing above. She came to us already doing it so seeing as they were our first greyhounds I assumed all of the girls peed like boys. Tarra doesn't do this though. Glad to hear there are some other Tomboys out there though. It used to crack us up as well. Bonnie seemed so proud of herself and tried to mark just as you describe.

Daylight, I have the same situation. When Liza and Gable came to us Liza had "ladylike" potty time but hanging out with Gable she started lifting her leg and still does it. Everyone in the neighbor thought she was a male - even though I try to make her look "girlie" with a pink collar, pink leash and a big toasty pink coat!!! She not only lifts her leg she has learnt how to "cover" it up by scratching the grass, leaves with each of her paws. She does make me chuckle as now when we go for walks she likes to leave her "pee mail" at every tree and lifts her leg each time.

Mary used to do her business just like Light and Liza but sometime within this past year she is back to girlie squatting. But she "marks" everything every couple of feet, far worse then the boys. These pups of ours are sure amusing!!

I have the same situation here! We have had Beenee now for almost six years and she was always very lady like until we adopted a male Copper five months ago. There is some role reversal here, Copper pees like a girl and Beenee pees like a boy. She only does this when we are out for our walks but not in the backyard. Her aim was not very good and her stream was hitting her back thigh. Even tho I would wash her butt after our walk, she developed what the vet referred to as "diaper rash". It got so bad that she needed a ten day course of antibiotics. I now have to grease her thigh up with desitin ointment before going out for our walks. The things we do for these dogs!!!!

Almost from the day we got Brandy (going on 11 years ago) she has lifted her leg while on walks, however she is starting to get weak in the rear end (she will be 14 in a few months) and can't hold her balance on one back leg, so she is now squatting like a lady,

Hana and Poppy are still dainty squaters but my parents Rotti-mutt does the, "balance on one leg, lift the other leg forward" stance.....and she has NEVER been around boys!!! LOL Tomboy to the core!

Rudy pees like a girl but marks like a boy and I too crack up watching her lift her toothpick leg trying to act like a boy!

And here I thought that my Bonnie was the only leg lifter, Jane! It does suit her personality, though. And I've also gotten the "girly" pink and purple collars and coats, to soften up those tomboy ways. It's not very often that I see her squat, lol.

We will have to keep an eye on Holly to see if she starts this habit, the only thing I have noticed and watched out for is when Holly finally decides to pee Mr.Bently likes to run over and as she is peeing , not giving her any privacy he will lift his leg and start peeing on her! The first time I thought it was an accident, now I think he does it because when Holly is peeing she cant chase him! I watch for that because even though he has over done his business numerous times he always has some left to squirt her with!!

Our angel Velvet would pee like a lady except on walks she would mark with her leg up if the "target" was elevated. Then she would do a very dainty bit of scratching. Scarlet has always peed like a girl, but she scuffs the ground after a poop, never a pee. Lastly Rupert, who is always a bit of a character, now makes quite a scene when he marks on walks (peeing in the backyard is quiet and uneventful). He snorts and growls while sniffing and preparing, growls while peeing with his leg half lifted, often hitting his own front feet, and then growls more loudly and sometimes even barks while he enthusiastically throws clumps of earth up to 15' behind him! He looks (and sounds!) quite aggressive when marking! Has anyone else had a dog growl while marking? I should add that he's quite gentle and not bossy to other dogs.

That's hilarious, renrus! I love how all critters have their little idiosyncrasies, and personality quirks that endear us to them. For me, it's proof that all creatures have a soul.
