Michel has been shedding something terrible ever since we moved to Welland two years ago. I can brush her in the morning, outside - after vacuuming the house, and by nightfall there are dust bunnies rolling around not to mention there will be loose hair on the tables and chairs.
I have been using a short, angled, long toothed comb and a wire brush, this morning I removed enough fur to build at least one more greyt. She gives herself a big shake in-between brushings and loads of fur fly off. After brushing her for about 10 minutes this morning when I pet her there was still lots of fur coming off. After about 10 - 15 minutes of brushing she's had enough and is ready to have a good shake and go back in the house to her comfy bed.
Any suggestions are welcome. I feed her Kirkland Lamb and Rice with a spoon full of tinned dog food mixed in to make a gravy and a good shot of Coconut Oil there is plenty of water available for her at all times. On this diet regime her stools are nice and firm and she seldom has more than two bowel movements a day.

Pat, Mary and Johnny have also been shedding a lot for the past several weeks. They both have thick top coats with a thick undercoat. I could brush them all day long and get a ton of fur in the end. When a dog loses an excessive amount of fur, it can be a result of diet (possibly a lack of minerals), hormone imbalance, allergies (to food, supplements, grass, etc), stress or a skin condition. And if that's the case, there are signs to look for such as dry brittle fur, bald patches or fur that breaks and falls out, skin sores, etc.
I've been hearing about a lot of hounds that have had some heavy-duty shedding this Spring but if you are concerned, then have Michel checked out with your vet. I hope all works out with your girl.

I have two shedding maniacs at home right now. They both look healthy, but my floors do NOT.

Honestly, I think a lot of the shedding this year is due to the strange weather we have been having. The 50 degree days here in amongst the 80+ degree ones are causing the coats to think it's time to shed imo. Every single grey owner in my area that I have spoken to (20+ at meet and greets) are ALL having the exact same issue with their hound's fur shedding like mad. I dutifully use each day a curry mitt and Farnam's shine block (both horse grooming implements but works far better then my furminator)and 3 times a week I whip out the zoom groom and always follow each grooming session with a real bristle soft brush and then a piece of silk cloth to shine him up a bit. It keeps Onyx well groomed and shiny so the shedding fur keeps pretty well at bay but he is still shedding like he has a thicker undercoat than he should have this time of year. I don't think it has any medical or lack of nutrients implications. Rather, just the weather imo.

Thank you, glad to hear I'm not alone with the shedding. Will try to find a horse grooming supply around the Welland area. I don't think it has anything to do with her supplements as she has been taking them since we brought her home 5 years ago. I will also start grooming her daily.

Grooming my guys everyday is what's helping them a lot, besides they all love the brushings and personal attention.

Went to Greenhawk in Beamsville and bought a curry comb and the stone, have been using the curry comb on Michel and what a difference -- I'm getting enough fur off her to build at least three more greys when I do her. Took her out into the yard this morning in preparation for her trip to The Extended Care Unit of the Welland Hospital and my Thursday manicure session with the ladies. Michel will simply lay in the great room and accept all the admiration due her whilst I do manicures. lol I left another three dogs in the yard just waiting to be built from the fur that came off her. What I'm wondering is why she doesn't look bald with all the fur that I'm removing. ha ha
Thank you so much for this very helpful tip I'm loving the curry comb, not the block so much, it seems to leave little bits of stone behind. Isobel the Whippet enjoys the curry comb too but doesn't lose hardly any fur. The cats also enjoy the curry comb.

Pat. and The Furr Kidds Beside The Canal in Wonderful Welland Hi Pat, I use the stone as well but I use it on their muzzles where food dries and it get's crusty! To clean the stone, simply scrape it on the edge of a step and voila - all the yucky stuff will scrape off!
