Hi everyone! I hope you're all enjoying a nice summer so far. Poor Teia has had a health issue come up recently and I thought I might get some advice/feedback from my greyt friends. She started with urinating more frequently on walks about 2 weeks ago and I thought she might be starting to mark (since she's picked up so many other traits from her little terrier brothers). Unfortunately, this evolved into accidents in the house, frequent urination in the yard, straining to urinate, constant licking etc. We took her to the vet about 10 days ago, and she was tested for a UTI (swabbed, they were unable to obtain a urine sample). She started a 7 day course of Amoxicillin/Clavulin and her symptoms appeared to abate somewhat. At this point, she's still urinating more often than usual, has had some accidents in the house (and I take her out every hour or so), still appears to strain when she urinates and is licking frequently. I've also noticed her eating greenery on our walks? Grass, weeds etc. Not sure if that's related. I'm taking her back to the vet today for a re-check, and I'm hoping they're able to get a urine sample for further testing. Can anyone offer any advice as to what else I can be doing for my poor pup? Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks!!!!! Deanna and Teia

I've never dealt with a bladder problem but one of my girls did develop incontinence with age If you want to try and collect a urine sample yourself, take a tin pie plate and wipe it down with rubbing alcohol, when she begins to squat, just tuck it under her bum and collect. Then you can transfer to a urine sample bottle which you can obtain free of charge at the vet's or even a human lab! Good luck and please keep us posted! M

Iv'e had Callie tested many times because I too found that when I was walking she would pee a lot and her urine was always very dark in colour. She also sometimes would pee in the house but that would always happen when she was laying down. My vet tested her urine more then once and nothing that out of normal came up. We did put her on antibiotics once as a precaution but that did nothing. We finally did a blood test and even that turned out fine. My vet did mention that she could be showing some sign of incontinence which can happen in older female dogs that are spayed (although Callie was only 4 at the time). My vet says it has something to do with low estrogen levels. She still pees a lot on walks and sometimes although still very rare she will pee on he dog bed(and it's been 3 years since she's been home)so i'm thinking she may be a little bit incontinent. I won't do anything about it right now since it's very sporadic and not constant but when it does get more consistent then I will more then likely put her on some sort of medication for the incontinence.

I think I remember reading somewhere that compared to other dogs Greyhounds do typically have darker urine. As I recall it has to do with the blood "disorder" they have where they produce "too many" redblood cells. The overproduction of RBCs causes changes in the liver and kidneys and gives them a darker pee.
I'll look it up and post again with citations when I am near a computer.

I stand corrected on the brown urine thing - this article does a much better job of explaining when it should be a concern and when it shouldn't. Also offers tips on what to expect with bloodwork. www.gcnm.org/concernsnews.htmlHope Teia feels better soon! Sent from my SGH-I747M using proboards
