I'm a bit of a procrastinator, and this is so hard, but I'm finally posting here for my beloved Velvet. She was my first greyhound, and she passed away in mine and my husbands arms on June 14 this year.
We adopted Velvet June 21 2009. I went looking for a big brindle boy, but Velvet chose my husband and as ever always, we couldn't say no to that little princess. She took a whole 30seconds to figure out life as a pet, but took a couple of years to convince daddy to let her on the couch. She was a petite greyhound with such a lovely arched back and a light step that she always reminded me of such a proper little lady. She was such a gentle and calm girl that she helped many kids and adults overcome their fear of dogs, and she seemed to always be self aware, never head butting anyone or hitting you with her tail. At her first few greyhound runs with the SSGG she was very timid, once even screaming in a scuffle and sending everyone into a pack drive session, but as she got older she became a little queen, standing up for herself and reprimanding others if they were ever rude! We adopted a second greyhound, Scarlette, in 2011 who turned out to be quite skittish, but calm little Velvet always led the way and showed Scarlette what a great place the world was.
During the summer of 2012 Velvet became very sick to her stomach and over the next two months she lost a quarter of her body weight and went through many rounds of tests but we never did figure out what was wrong with her. As a last resort we switched her to raw, and everything seemed to mysteriously get (mostly) better. Ever after she had a severe gas of acid reflux but we learned ways to a mange it and she regained her weight and health, with the occasional episodes of severe upset stomach. In between the episodes she would be the picture of health with a wonderful soft coat and very active and affectionate. Then May-June this year she had two very severe episodes of vomiting and weakness that we couldn't figure out the cause of, but she still bounced back with our care. Then on Thursday the 13th she became sick for the last time, but we didn't realize that this time was different until it was too late. Just as we had decided to take her to the vets to help with a sudden onset of muscle spasms she seized and then died in our arms. It was horrible, but at least it was quick.
Sorry for the overly detailed account, but this isn't something you can share with everyone, but I'm sure you guys will understand, I've been needing to share this.
Here are some of my favorite pics of my beautiful Miss V.
Her first day home.
A severe case of ETS
Velvet and Scarlette cuddling,
And Velvet cuddling with footwear... One of her favorite activities.
She will be missed.
