Anyone else's greys afraid of stairs and shiny floors? Zooks can't climb any more than 2 or 3 steps, and when he sees a shiny floor, he won't walk on it! He's terrified of ceramic tile floors, especially white ones! It's so funny, yet so weird!

Roman is petrified of most stairs unless their carpeted and/or not steep. Even my parent's staircase at home scares the crap out of him eventhough it's carpeted, because it turns a corner at the top and he just does NOT know what to do! Meganm can attest to Roman's paranoia of stairs. And FORGET the ones in my apartment building...if there's ever a fire I told my landlord he has to come up and carry Roman down 5 stories or else we'll be waiting for the fire trucks on the balcony He's not too bad with slippery floors though...he's not a huge fan of them but he'll walk on them with some encouragement

Haha, Zooks is the same way, except with floors, if theres something weird going on, like a hallway, or a railing (my boyfriends sisters house has stairs going to the basement and upstairs right next to eachother, and a walkway next to them which is railed but shiny white tile, and he HATES it. He cries and makes us carry him! So do you bring Roman up the elevator? Do you find it hard to take him out?

Yes we use the elevator and there's only 1 so if it's in use then Roman sometimes has too "cross his legs" for a while before he can go for a pee break! Initially it was very challenging to get him in the elevator at all because he couldn't quite figure out the whole concept of the elevator...nor did he like it...and it also has a tiled floor which added to his misery Now he could care less though, so they get used to it over time and with some determination on your part Once they realize they don't have a choice they generally will adjust!

Stairs were a nightmare for Atlas. It took me 6 months to teach him how to go down the cement ones in my apartment building. We lived on the 8th floor and often had middle of the night fire alarms. So I'd carry him down the 8 flights of stairs.. taking about a million breaks in between. When Dbf was home, he carried him. Eventually, he decided that being carried down the stairs wasn't desireable so he gave it a try Ceramic tiles, especially, are very slippery. Our laminate floors are like a skating rink for Orion... he's done the splits more than once. It's just another thing that they need to adjust to.

Rubber backed mats and runners and area rugs here, the injuries are not worth it, the rugs are much cheaper and I don't have to watch the suffering that comes with a fall they can happen frequently enough just running in the yard, Callie fell on the hardwood floor trying to walk around Sunny who was standing on the carpet runner and her legs went out from under her (later replaced with a room sized area rug) and the result was she tore the ligaments in one knee, because with rest it can sometimes heal on its own we waited 8 weeks but her toes curled under and she lost the use of that leg, while she was put on strong pain meds during that time but the they helped a bit , surgery cost to repair the one knee came to a grand total of $2500, during the presurgery xrays osteo was found near the hip, because her pain was so bad by this point and she could no longer stand or lay down on her own, I helped her to the bridge. Sunny fell on the linoleum and injured his spine, it took several weeks to be able to walk around without yelping in pain vet costs were for xrays and anti inflammatories and muscle relaxants.

Hi there -
In our house, Sy can go down and jump up the "small" stairs (3 steps) to the backyard. Everynight he figured out the climbing of the stairs to the 2nd level to our bedroom. But in the mornings, we have to (ok, my husband does it) carry him down as he freezes when he sees the stairs going down.
We have tried to help him down but it may take a while. No worries, better than him getting hurt.

Out of my three Greys...
One has never liked nor he will ever like the tiles and hardwood floors. Strategically placed carpets and mats helped a lot. He also climbs the stairs very very cautiously.
Two tackled the stairs and slippery floors, fell, rolled, and jumped back up and never thought twice about it.
I noticed that there is a relationship between their "experimenting and silly courage" and their personalities. The shy, reserved, sweet one is the one having difficulties while the two bad as#, happy, goofballs Greys took on every challenges bravely.

Tyson does okay with stairs but slippery/shiny floors are a nightmare. The viynl flooring in my kitchen (on the way to outside and where he eats) was a nightmare until we put a carpet runner (with a no slip mat underneath) from the living room door to where his water/food dishes are and to the mud room door. He looked like Bambi on ice. Tara

I live in an apartment building on the 1st floor (luckily). Honey will go UP the cement, painted stairs, but she'll rarely come down, even one flight. I think they're a touch slippery, fairly steep, and the fact that the railing is 'see through' perhaps gives her a little dizzyness when she looks through. When she does come down them, she'll hug the wall side, and try to stay beside me most of the way down. My brother lives on the 3rd floor of a downtown building, and the stairs there are wider, shallower, and carpeted, still with the see-through railings however. She goes up just fine, and I 've had to carry her down 4 times now *UGH!* but she's fairly willing to try them initially as they're carpeted. Once again, she stays on the 'wall side' though, and stays almost beside me when descending. I thought it would be prudent to teach her stairs in case we're visiting and there's a fire or something. I might not be able to carry her down much longer (bad back). I'm more or less confident she's 2/3rds the way there, and that's not a bad thing.

At the beginning of Sept we moved into a full house from an apartment and we are still having a terrible time trying to get Outta to go down the stairs. She goes up no problem (a little clumsy but she can make it) but going down...well she just wont do it. We have tried everything including leashing her, not leashing her, coaxing with toys and treats, going up with her and then coming down and waiting to see if she'll just follow eventually but nothing has worked. She just digs her nails into the carpet and REFUSES to move. Eventually my husband has just had to go up and carry her down. We would appreciate any suggestions anyone has to try and help Outta know that she can do it Incidentally, she will do the stairs off the back deck to the yard no problem but there are only 3 of them Debbie

mine are not afraid of stairs, we live on the second floor of the apartment building so they learned stairs quick. Linoleum floors drive them crazy tho. Our kitchen is linoleum and Abby hates being in there. At our trailor, our bathroom used to be carpeted but we pulled it up and put tile down. Tigger didn't know, and its two steps to the bathroom, then two to the bed, and He went running up the two stairs to the bathroom, hit the tile, panic and fell. It was quite funny, once I checked to see my boy was alright.

Valerie isn't afraid of the elevator or shiny floors. Shuffle however is a little bit afraid of the elevator as he has never seen one before but over 2 days and go out frequently during the day it has become a lot easier for him. He was however, terrified of the white tiles in the bathroom as well until we put a rug on the floor. We trying to give him a bath and as soon as we put something on the floor that he could feel, no problem. Now he is a lot more relaxed when he steps both into the elevator and the bathroom. They both don't have any problem with the linoleum floor in the kitchen and that is where the food is, and no problem with dark tile floors. We still have not tried stairs yet.
I am so happy to see so many people respond and give great advise for all us " Newbies " with our Grey's. Thank you all very much!!!

We're still working on some stairs. Some stairs are no problem, others she refuses. Carrying her down from the 19th floor during a fire alarm was a challenge + 3 days of aching muscles.
