Hello everyone,
We took our darling hound to the cherry beach dog park today, and something unexpected happened.
We're always very cautious at the dog park, keeping her on a lead until we're sure she is safe with the other dogs around her. Today, there were hardly any other dogs nearby, so we let her off her leash to chase her ball for a bit, which is her all-time favorite thing to do lately. But we had a bit of a scare when she suddenly bolted after a large white kite that was attached to a kite boarder and IN the water.
She started swimming after it, and we were, of course very concerned, knowing that Greys are not strong swimmers, so we ran in after her, calling her name and thankfully she started swimming back to us when we called.
She's usually so good, she doesn't chase anything but her ball. We've even got her ignoring squirrels now. And we always make certain to never let her off leash unless she is in a secure fenced area. Also, we never expected her to chase after something that was already in the air, as she usually ignores flying things.
So we were very surprised by this, and now we wonder if anyone else has experienced anything similar. We were also wondering why this particular item was so tempting for her to chase. We were wondering if the shape and motion of the kite somehow mimicked the lure that is used to teach them to race?
Even after her "swim" she was upset that we did not allow her to continue to chase the kite into the water. It was the strongest response we've seen so far.

I actually think that would have been pretty special to see, too bad you didn't have your camera handy! Sometimes my guys will take chase after leaves completely out of the blue, and frankley, they make themselves look pretty silly! In your case, perhaps there is a similarity in the sound but I wouldn't think visually. Sounds like your girl is beautifully bonded to you in the way that she responded - nice!

I wish you had some video of that. About a week ago I was putting down mulch and the wind took the empty plastic bag off down the garden. Next thing I know Scully is after in a flash. He won't even chase a squirrel, so this was a surprise for me as well.
I have done some checking and read that they sometimes use plastic bags as a lure in training. You mentioned that she likes to chase a ball. my guy fetches a ball better than any retriever at the park. Does your pup happen to come from Birmingham? I have met another hound that retrieves a ball and she came from there to GRA. Someone is teaching them to fetch a ball down there. I would love to know who and how.
