Over the past few walks, Booker has been raising his hackles when meeting other dogs. At first I was very concerned, now I'm just confused, as all his other behaviours are unchanged. Low/mid height tail wag, ears curious but not bunny-eared, no sign of statueing or growling. Good nose-sniffs, and after the formalities, the more casual butt-sniffs. He has no real reluctance to continue on the walk when I tell him it's time to go. But his hackles are up the entire time.
Anyone else have greys doing this? Should I be concerned, or is this another "greys are just weird" thing?

Donot know if it is a greyhound behavior persee, but I have seen Dash do it once or twice and it looked like a warning as in "donot bug me".

Only two of mine show this occasionally but it never appears to be nerve or anger related. Just heightened and excited with the other dogs. I'm sure others will join in and perhaps offer something a little more substantial.

Well my dachshund Leo shows has his hackles quite often, mainly when he parks at the dog across the street and gets anxious. My greys never do it.

That's the dog's system responding to something it sees or hears. You're more likely to see it on leash because the constraint of the leash always creates a certain 'back pressure' - physical and mental. So, the thinking is that a small strip of raised hair at the neck is aggression with intent. A large patch of raised hair is just stimulation like fear or excitement,... My golden 'fluffs' when she's scared. My collie has thin straight up hackles when she lunges at big intruder-dogs on the tv screen and she's very assertive with strange dogs outside. hth

All right, sounds like it's nothing to really be concerned about. He must just be extra excited because it's spring and all the good sniffs are out! Thanks for the input, all!

Summer "hackles" when she runs and it's just excitement. It's a large amount, like sandysfarm described.
