Osh Kosh has always had really really bad breath and his teeth and gums seem fine. Is there anything I can do?

I had this issue with my girl, Izzy. I asked the vet about it and she said that if there are no other medical issues and the teeth and gums are good then the next thing they look at is a digestive issue. I changed Izzy's food to one without beet pulp and her breath is much better. There could be something in Osh Kosh's food that doesn't agree with him.

well, if you don't think he's got a tooth or gum problem, I think Izzy's mom has a good idea, perhaps something to check out. sorry I couldn't be of more help. do you brush his teeth? a little baking soda and a bit of water can do wonders! maybe a little food compaction? Martha

If you're sure there's not a medical problem (this can indeed be an indication of a digestive issue or a deep pocket gum problem) you might try spritzing his mouth with some CS and see if it helps. Beet pulp is a form of fiber that they often put in to help firm up poops, but as the previous poster said, too much fiber can be a problem too.

One of my Angel hounds had bad breath .. and after having the teeth checked at the vets which showed the mouth was healthy, I introduced a good probiotic into his diet. At that time, I was pleased with the kibble/supplements that he was eating so didn't really want to change the meal if it wasn't necessary. I was amazed ... the probiotic did its work and the bad breath disappeared. To this day, I give all my hounds a probiotic once daily to aid in the digestive process from start to finish and assist in modulating the immune system. Probiotics inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria and help maintain a healthy balance of good bacteria.
