What would you recommend to get the elbows healed up, the vet thought Vaseline might help. His elbows were rubbed raw from his crate guess, Ive been putting polysporin while it healed but wondering what might be useful to help soften the rough skin.

Anything that softens skin would help--Bag Balm, Vitamin E (my vet prefers the stuff from capsules rather than ointment), and so on. I'd use BioBalm, which I got through the clinic. You could even continue to use the Polysporin--the clear gel stuff would be better than the white stuff.

Sandra, I use the same thing on elbows as I do on paws which is Bag Balm or the like which is mentioned above. Just to let you know, Nic has had raw, dry, cracked elbows for almost 2 years and nothing seems to soften them. I don't think it bothers him, in fact, I don't think he even knows they're like that! Martha If you don't have any paw meds in the house, even some olive oil would work. It's nice in the bath too!

Our Georgia had a chafed belly, and we were informed that Fiskes Salve/ointment, available at Greenhawk works well. Her skin was back to normal in just a couple of days. I think it would work very well on elbows as well. It contains Shea butter and various other things and is safe for dogs and horses.
It comes in a jar and costs about $10. You can look at Greenhawk's website.

I use Fiskes Salve\Ointment for my horse. I love the product and its all natural, met the lady who's grandfather invented the stuff. They have specific products for people too, I use the soap. I love the smell and it's not harsh on my skin. Both Bahrs saddlery and System fencing carry it as well, possibly most horse tack shops.

My boy Onyx came to me with no fur on his elbows at all, no fur on his throat, very little on his thighs and a smooth fur-less belly. I started around 2 months ago giving him a tablespoonful of coconut oil in his food each morning and a time or two a week rubbing the affected areas with the same organic virgin coconut oil. I am very pleased to say that his elbows, thighs and most of his throat is all furry! His belly got a little fuzzy but not by much tbh. The rest though...WOW! I have also had a great many people, even at meet and greets with other greys there, say he has an unusually soft and luxurious coat and I would have to agree. I also have a pack of unscented wet wipes and a small container of coconut oil beside me so that when he roaches on the couch I can just wipe his paws and apply the coconut oil to keep his pads in good shape. I cannot stress how much I love using coconut oil for myself and now my houndie. I buy it at Costco and it's the cheapest place I have found to buy organic virgin coconut oil.

How interesting, I never even thought of coconut oil for the dogs. I'm in the midst of reading a book that speaks of all the greatness of coconut oil!

Cold pressed organic virgin coconut oil is awesome and I too buy it from Costco. It has so many excellent properties and can be used in so many ways, both internally and externally for our hounds. It's used to help with digestion, clears infections, promotes healthy skin, has antioxidant properties, disinfects wounds, clears up rashes, etc.
