Good Morning everyone,
While I wait for my vet to open (thank goodness they are open all weekend!) I thought I would post here. Augie had a tooth extracted yesterday during his dental and when we picked him up he was still very woozy from the anesthetic. We picked him up at 5:30 and it took him until 9 to pee! So our night was a bit rough but he did eventually settle. Around 5:30 am though he got very upset and has been pacing and whining non-stop and is clearly more alert. We fed him, he ate with gusto and kept it down but then more whining and pacing. We aren't scheduled to give him more meds until noon but I'm wondering if this is pain, as opposed to a bad experience with the drugs. Anyone ever seen this before?
Thanks for any advice you have, Ann

Ann, I experienced this years ago with one of the whippets. I would suggest that poor Augie was given too much anesthetic but I doubt your vet would suggest that to you. For our pup, it just took time to wear off. This is just my own personal experience. Hope Augie settles soon, please keep us posted and give that boy a hug for me! Martha

He has settled down now. I called the vet and they agreed that he has a tough time coming off anesthetic, "even for a greyhound" in their words. Since he did settle they agree he is more likely "having a bad trip" than in great pain. Needless to say this something we are going to talk about if he needs to be sedated again. They are great vets in so many ways but I think we need to change the plan when he goes under because this doesn't seem to be good for him.
Thanks, Ann

Very happy to hear that Augie has settled down. A "bad trip" is not a fun one, that's for sure.

The homeopathic remedy Arnica is excellent for helping to clear the effects of drugs. If you have any, or any Traumeel, it would be of great help.

When Frankie (now Angel Frankie)had to have a canine tooth extracted he suffered a "bad trip" as well. He had been given the usual anesthetic for greyhounds but he had a reaction to it causing him to become quite agitated with whining and pacing, just like what you described with Augie. He wasn't himself until the following day after his surgery. The vets had made a note in his file to not repeat the same anesthetic for any further surgeries but would administer one different that was also approved and safe for greyhounds. Just make sure your vet has made note of Augie's reaction in his file so he doesn't have a repeat reaction.
Glad to hear that Augie is back to being himself. What a relief ....

Thanks everyone. I called them this morning and the vet working today called me back immediately. Later this afternoon the vet tech who was in on the surgery saw that I had called and also called me just to make sure Augie was okay. They really do seem to care so I will bring this up at his 14 day check. They all seem to know he doesn't react well so hopefully they will be open to a new med or less if there is a "next time" for sedation.
In the meantime, he is back to his roaching self, is eating well and had his usual 3 walks so I think it is out of his system.

Wow, this must have been concerning. I'm so glad he's settled down now and that you got quick confirmation from others that this had happened to their pups. Poor pup and poor parents!

Ann ... I just noticed Augie's avatar and just wanted to say what a hilarious photo of your boy. I actually took a double take and then burst out laughing. It's perfect ......

Thanks Angelollie! It is my favourite photo of him. He was lying on the couch at the time, hence the tongue hanging out to the "side". My co-workers think he looks like the demented squirrel from Ice Age .
