Hello! When I brought River home she had no undercoat. In a few places she's grown little patches of undercoat now (the sides of her neck, under her shoulder blades, and just in front of her tail) but most of her fur is still just top coat. I've tried out a few different brushes but nothing I've tried collects those top coat hairs. Loosens them yes, collects them no. My fleece sweaters are still the best thing I've found for gathering up those top coat hairs (and I'd really rather use something else).
When enough of her undercoat sheds out to create a fur tangle in the brush, my rubber Kong brand brush works great. Normally, however, I just end up with a pile of disconnected furs and nothing that will pick them up. I tried a metal "slicker" brush, but she's made it very clear that it hurts and that I'm not to use it any more.
Any suggestions on what makes a good greyhound brush?
Thanks!

I use a rubber brush, it has little nubs on it that the fur sticks to. Slappy loves being brushed with it and it doesn't have any thing to poke him. I think I picked it up at Pet Value. I asked them for a brush for a dog with very fine short fur and this was what they recommended.

I've also got a rubber pad with little nodules on it works well. In the meantime whilst you're waiting for the chance to go out and buy one of those, put rubber gloves on your hands and run under warm tap so they are wet and run your hands over her coat. It works for me.

Hey Whovian... Magnify and I loved our walk with River the other day. She is such a pretty little thing. We also use a little green rubber brush that sort of loosens the hair a bit and then I take a nice warm washcloth squeezed out and just lightly go over hem to try to collect the hair. He really enjoys this type of massage type brushing

I think we use the same brush - the kong brand zoom groom! (although ours is cat-shaped because it was a dollar cheaper than the dog shaped one for some strange reason.) It does pretty well at both loosening and collecting most of the fur for Booker, though I always run a hand over him to pick up the loose bits that the brush didn't grab. He's usually laying down and calm during brushings, so I can take my time and do multiple sweeps.

I find that the soft bristle brush work well for my guy. but he does not have a lot of hair that comes off. I brush him every day at least once, I think that keeps the hair down to a manageable amount.
You might think that is excessive but I have two cats who climb up on my lap in the morning and again in the evening for a brush and Scully has just joined in the party but only in the evening. Cats can be very persuasive when they are purring on your lap.

Like Laara and rubyLottie, I use the rubber pad w little nubs. It collects the hair. It has a little strap so it fits right on your hand. Tee likes it. I think i got it at Pet Valu.

I have found the ZoomGroom is the best brush for short-haired breeds. For my greyhound, I find the cat ZoomGroom works best vs the dog ZoomGroom. I also have a Furminator (used gently and really only in the spring). My new favorite item was recommended by a fellow grey owner and it's a "Slick 'n Easy" horse grooming block. It's great to use in conjunction with the ZoomGroom.

Thank you everyone fur the advice! Next time I am at petvalu I will look for the zoom groom, but for now the wet rubber glove/ washcloth trick is a good start. River likes water a lot (go figure) so she's happy about any chance to get wet, even with just a little water.
Cheers!

I too, use the cat zoom groom instead of the dog sized 1...works very well. In regards to horse grooming tools, Greenhawk has a great assortment of curry comb styles that should work well. There is also something called a hounds glove, it is rubber as well. For the loose hair that the zoom groom doesn't pick up, I've been known to use a lint roller over Wynonna...she actually quite enjoys it and will lean right into it! My groomer uses something called a shedding stone...I think it is pumice and all the loose hair practically jumps on it!

Yes, dunnrunnin, the equestrian "Slick 'n Easy" is a shedding stone. I believe we're talking about the same thing. I think. LOL! Yup, loose hair does practically jump onto it. And yet, I can blow it off the block just as easily. It's great to use near the end -- not quite at the end as some little bits will shed from the block itself and you need to do a quick sweep to remove them, which is very easy.
If anyone hasn't tried it, the rubber hound glove is WONDERFUL to use when bathing. Bathing the dog, that is. LOL! It foams up the shampoo really really well.

@ Summer's Mom (Lisa) re: slick n easy...I do believe we are talking about the same magic stone AND to Whovian...I just received a flyer in the mail yest from Greenhawk...guess what they have in there...AND its on sale for 2.99!! It may not be called the slick n easy, but you would be looking for a squarish grey/blk block made from lavastone/pumice You can likely order from their website, but not sure if the sale is online or just instore... Cheers!

I use a Zoom Groom as well! I also have an oval soft real bristle brush (Cesar Millan Brand) but above all I use my rubber curry mitt I used to use on my horse! It works the absolute best! If you go buy a rubber curry mitt branded for dogs you will pay $20+ but buying the horse one costs anywhere from $2 - $5 and does a better job imo. Check your local Co-Op or tack and feed store for them. Here is a link so you can see the horse mitt and know what to look for www.adamshorsesupplies.com/Roma-Rubber-Grooming-Curry-Mitt-P4809.aspx
