Our gal developed a limp shortly after we got her 5 years ago, it comes and goes but in this colder weather seems to be at it's worst. It's almost as if she cannot hold her back 'hock' upright at times. She does have corns but the limp has been there on and off even before she developed corns. Just lately within the last week or so it's really gotten quite severe after she has been lying or sleeping for sometime (similar to when you've been sitting awhile and when you get up your one foot or leg is asleep and you can't walk on it). When she does get up she is hobbling on the one leg, however when I take her outside it does seem to dissipate somewhat once she gets walking/moving on it. She has been examined in the past by two vets and also at the Niagara Clinic that x-rayed her hips about 3 years ago with nothing showing. They all seem to just put it down to a 'race injury' of some sort or 'tendon' issue? Glucosamine was recommended by one vet but our new vet said it actually does nothing (even in the human medical field apparently there is no proof that it actually accomplishes anything or improves joint issues). It appears to be weather related and has only ever occurred with the same rear leg. Also the corns have been an ongoing issue with the poor girl for over a year now, have tried ALL the remedies mentioned and even had the vet deal with them (which provided some temporary relief, but have since grown back in). She is such a sweet gal and never voices any sign of pain but not sure what can be done to improve her overall situation?

So sorry to hear about Stormie's predicament. I have found that all 3 of my Greys have always had "stiffness issues" when getting up after an extended sleep. I have always figured this was an arthritis issue due to their age (I have always adopted the older Broodies). I have never had to deal with corns however so I cannot give you advice that way but I can tell you I have always supplemented my girls with Glucosamine/Chondroitin Sulfate/MSN. Not sure why the one vet told you it was useless, it is not a cure but it does help in decreasing inflammation and improves the body's ability to repair & strengthen tissue as per all the research I have looked into. The key is you must give it daily & you must give the ample dosage based on dog's weight - we tend to not give enough. But in no way will it correct structural damage to a joint (ie reverse calcium deposits, torn cartilage, scar tissue).
Have you ever considered chiropractic treatment? Won't help with the corn issue, but I can attest that it helped my 11 year old Buffy with mobility in her hind end.
Wishing you good luck in getting some answers to Stormie's condition.

Thanks to both of you for your input......must be a stiffness/joint issue as it seems to have gone now after about a week of severe limping once she would get up from lying down. At times she could hardly walk on it until she got it going once we went walking. She only has a mild limp now which is no doubt due to the corns (just cannot seem to get rid of those). I'll get onto the remedies as suggested and see if that helps to alleviate the stiffness issue. Thanks again!

Glad to hear the limp has improved, hopefully you can get a handle on those corns now and she can get back to normal.
