Yesterday we brought Lexi (TDS Lexie) home! She seems to be adapting quite well! She figured out the deck stairs really quick and even asks to go out now. She has been great with the kids and we're working on the cat.
We have some trouble getting her to come back inside. She would rather we come out and play with her. We decided to crate her at night, for the safety of the cat, but it is really hard to get her in. Any suggestions? She doesn't seem to care for treats.
She is a great dog! Like no other dog I've ever met, but perfect for this family!

Aww CONGRATULATIONS!! Adopting a grey will be the greatest thing you have done in your life, as I am finding! I actually have a houndie that is not very food motivated but his trainer must have done a fabulous job with him as he is a very easy houndie to deal with for the most part. I tried a kong with peanut butter (no go),a cookie (no go) and a toy (no go). What I finally did was loosely guide him by the collar and say "kennel up" and he went right in. I read about the "kennel up" being the words the trainers use at the track to kennel them and well, it worked for me it might work for you. Have fun with your new pup! They are wonderful family members!

I'll have to try kennel up. It's not easy lifting and sliding her in. She just tenses up.

Congratulations on bringing Lexie home! Our guy (Magnify) didn't want to go in his kennel either at first and did not seem interested in his KONG either. I agree it is tough trying to get them to go in the crate when they don't want to, but I think that if you persist with the Kong (we use his regular kibble and the peanut butter), Lexie will eventually get the idea that this is a great place to go. Mag now goes right in ("kennel up" and starts with his kong), and when we get home, he's usually sleeping. Now, he even goes and gets that kong out of there, the minute he gets out and inspects the place. Enjoy your new houndie (I know we certainly are).

Congrats on your new girl. Can't wait for pictures. Try to make going in the crate just a normal part of the routine, head off to bed, I'm sure she will be following you around by now and walk up to the crate and say, either kennel up,or in you go etc. Have the cookie ready once she turns around to face the door. Keep in mind that these dogs are truly creatures of habit and they are used to a crate. it's just because the crate is not the same one as she has been in and it is definitely not in the same place.
Make it nice and comfy for her, a nice thick blanket etc and before you know it that will be a great place for her. I know you probably want to spoil her rotten at this point, but the more routine she can have right now, the better it will go for all of you. She has had tons of new things coming at her all at once and they are used to a routine, so the more routine you can provide the better. My opinion only and you will be able to spoil her for the rest of her life. And you will spoil her, we can't help it they are so darn cute and loveable.
Enjoy your new girlie!

Apparently, my toddler taught Lexi how to get in! Too funny! Now she keeps going in. She's been in there most of the evening. Oh well, if that's where she's happy, it's fine with me.

Congratulations! Glad Lexie is doing so well and fitting in with your family. Things will work itself out. You can muzzle her around the cat as well so they can interact more as they get used to each other. Enjoy our new girl.

Congratulations on bringing your new girl home. She is doing well by the sounds of it. And don't worry if she's not interested in treats at this point. Her entire life has been switched up and although she may appear to be relaxed on the outside, she will be stressed mentally and emotionally at this point. This is a whole new world she is living in now and she is on her own for the first time in her life. A dog can show stress through lack of appetite, including treats, loose stools, etc. But each day she explores and adapts to her new environment her inner self will settle down as well. It won't be long before she is a full fledged member of the family. Again congrats ... she gorgeous. Hoping to see lots of photos.
