in a second! My sweet, quiet, loving boy, Top who picks up stuffies with his lips and melts my heart with a simple glance from those big brown eyes.....turned into a salivating, nose dripping, cheek puffing, trembling hunk of killer boy today when a raccoon decided to wobble across the yard in broad daylight this afternoon......a good reminder of what would happen if our lovely kitties got out the door by mistake. Stella, his sister missed the action as she was in a deep sleep inside after a run. Rocky Raccoon is an excellent and fast climber and we have trees in the periphery so all ended well for him. Then! a cat got into our fenced yard, a completely shaved one which I think looks more delicious to a greyhound than a furry one. Top by then was having a snooze indoors. Their evening outing will be full of interesting aromas though.....I will definitely be accompanying them on their evening pee tonight!

isn't it incredible what can happen? We thought Rio had low prey drive...she lived with Little Kasie and 3 cats, after all. And then she went to the vet's office as a support for Tiana for her first visit, and was in the waiting room with a very yippy little white fluffy dog. Rio turned into a deadly killing machine in an instant...we could do nothing to break her stare...she was doing everything except salivate, and it took all of Harold's strength to hold her back (he had to take her outside away form the "cute little dog"). Rio is also the one who caught a squirrel in our backyard while Mirage and Willy were oblivious to it.
Rio is still just fine with our 3 cats...and is the one who actually corrals them in the back yard when they get out by accident, barks at them to pin them against the fence so they won't move until we can get them, and then barks at them the rest of the night to "give them heck" for escaping (remember, her nickname is "Mama Rio"), but God help any little white fluffy dog she sees on walks.
Here is hoping Stella and Top don't get into any scraps with Rocky...or the bald kitty!

You can always pop a muzzle on them before they go out, that will slow down his ability to hurt any critters, although they still can even through a muzzle if they are smart. And Top is.

two secrets ... I too ran into the same trouble you did with a raccoon. Not knowing that Frankie was prey driven (he wasn't two years old yet), I let the gang out for their last call one evening. Out pops a little inexperienced raccoon from under the patio table and within a second Frankie had nailed it. Fortunately for the raccoon, Frankie just carried it around the yard proud as a peacock at this prize that was hanging from his chops. I'm chasing him around the pool with a broom and finally he did drop it. The poor thing ran off looking just horrified but not injured. From that point on, I would do surveillance around the yard before letting the gang outside, I also had a cow bell that I rang, and finally, muzzled Frankie. He is now 5 years old and doesn't seem to be as interested in small animals (although I still wouldn't trust him totally). Having their personalities change so quickly from Mr. Nice Guy to Mr. Savage sure does give one a huge scare .... of what could have happened.

our Cutter caught a squirrel once. It played dead, I made him drop it, then the squirrel scurried away. It was priceless.

I have been experiencing a high prey drive with Remy - she just turned 2. She caught a squirrel in our yard last week and nearly killed the poor thing..if I hadn't ran out like a crazy person and stopped her, lunch would have been served. Remy loves dogs..any kind of dog..especially little ones. I am concerned about her and small dogs. I find that she overwhelms little dogs (I'm talking little as in less than 15 pound toy dogs) to the point where she follows them around non-stop. She has never "gone after" a small dog..I have watched for aggression and it all seems to be very playful. I am worried though about my moms little bichon. They have met and get along great..now that Remy is developing a stronger prey drive, is there cause for concern on leaving them alone at all ? Thanks!

yes there's huge reason to be careful! Don't let her "follow" any littler dogs - it's a precursor to chasing with intent and you're looking at it. Understand that instinct tells a dog to do just about everything he does. If he grabs a little pet and starts to shake it the damage may be irreparable. A good rule of thumb is not to ever set your dog up to cause trouble. Nix the offleash.
