NOT a good April Fools start for us this morning....I let Top and Stella out the back which is about 1/2 acre fenced with 3 gates that never, never, never are opened with wires that only strong hands can manipulate holding them closed.......poured coffee, sat down at the table in the front room, glanced outside....it honestly took my brain a couple of seconds to comprehend seeing Top heading down the driveway!!!!!!!!!!!!I am a panicker, my husband is cool and calm and much better than I in such a situation...
I ran outside screaming for my kids while Ray got the leashes...he threw me a leash as Top went sailing by YES! back INTO the gate! Top is our scaredy boy and I guess decided that if his Alpha sister wasn't going to stick with him, then he would head for safety!
Thank goodness I could see Stella way down the street happily sniffing neighbours' yellow snow banks. I jangled the leash, yelling Stella, go for a walk! Stella, go for a walk! YES! right to me! like lightning! I was lucky.
Poor Stella didn't realize she was already on the most awesome off leash walk of her life (it better be the last)
We had company for Easter...I wonder who opened the gate?

Yikes! That must have been very scary. I'm so glad it ended without any problems. Poor you. I would have freaked too.

Very scary! Thank god it was resolved quickly.
Has happened to me before but I lost my little dachshund Leo for over 1 hour in the neighbourhood. He's small and hard to find. Thank god some kids found him. My heart sank for fear of not finding him. I know how you felt.
We put locks on our gates now to be safe. Don't know why people don't shut gates when they know you have a dog.

I'd definitely put a padlock on my gates if I were you. So glad you got them safely back. There is a Yorkshire Terrier that lives 1/4 mile away from me, and one of the workmen left a door open, and Louie got out. This tiny dog was spotted by 2 different people but the dog would not go to them. This was 6 months ago and the poor owner has not see the dog since. She has taken in a rescue dog, a mix of terrier plus who knows, and I met her for the first time this last week and she told me about the circumstances. I don't think she'll ever get her Louie back again. www.b14news.co.uk/help-us-find-missing-louie-the-yorkshire-terrier/www.facebook.com/Missinglouie?fref=ts

Ugh.
I'm glad they're both back safely.
[Not to hijack, but my escapee was Minnie. The electrician left the gate open. A couple of kids were good enough to come and tell me she was down the street; I got her back right away. Have since had self-closures installed on the gates. And put little laminated cards on the gates saying, "Please Close Gate. Dogs Live Here."]

Scary stuff, I'm so glad it all turned out well. I can only imagine your panic. Thank goodness they were not super brave.

Terrifying. Glad everyone made it back safely. I haven't had this happen to me yet, and I hope it never does. Unfortunately, it happened to my mother last week though. My mom heads to my place everyday to take Froggy out for her afternoon walk. While chatting with another dog owner, another person came around the corner with his dog. His dog had recently attacked the other person's dog and that pup went nuts. Froggy is no fan of barking dogs and so she went nuts and got out of her collar. My mother could do nothing but stand there as Froggy ran. She ran circles for what seemed like forever, but probably forgot that she was scared and came back to play with the dogs. That's when my mother, now in tears, was able to grab Froggy and put her on the leash. The phone call I received at work was not a fun one as I tried my best to calm my poor mom down. We live near a ravine with deer and rabbits galore, but just on the other side is a hwy ( the DVP), and she couldn't get over the "what if". My mom and the two other dog owners did agree on one thing though...Greyhounds sure run fast

OMGosh! What a horrible, helpless feeling! You knew the trick to get her to come back though... good thinking despite the panic-mode!

Scarlette has gotten away from my parents while they were dogsitting by slipping out of a harness! They followed her around their subdivision for about an hour playing catch me if you can and then dad decided to try the car. They put Velvet in the backseat, drove up to Scarlette, opened the door and she hopped right in! Now she's always on a collar!
