Hi...I just adopted a beautiful cuddly greyhound it's only been a week and Ice has one big problem I can't leave let it be for 20 sec to 20 min...she whines and whines...I had her out of crate and when dog walker went over my blinds were gone so now back to crate. Any idea from anyone how I can get her to stop!!! I also have a chic lab but it doesn't stop Ice from losing it...I need help!

I used google to search this forum on alone training, as that's what you need to do. There are many many threads with lots of ideas and information for you: Alone TrainingIt just takes some time - sometimes they are better out of the crate and baby-gated, sometimes not, but check some of those threads, the answers are all there.

I suspect you will be able to leave her at some point, but not right now, she's too stressed. She will get better in time.

It took Froggy just over two months before we could leave her out of the crate when we left. There are still times when she whines, barks and becomes a little destructive when we leave, but it's rare, and only when we are off schedule. The baby gate wasn't a success for us- she just ate the door frame We took our time leaving her out for a few minutes while we sat outside so she could get use to it. We never made a big deal about leaving or coming back either. We also leave the radio on for her and bought two Kongs that we stuff with food/peanut butter and freeze over night. It will get better over time. Good luck.

Well she has torn down 3blinds all in all it's ok compared to why she could of done. The problem is also I work shift work and my dog walker doesn't work on certain days and I would hate to leave her in a crate for 12 hours that will stress her out even more. She is a great girl when in home but as soon as I leave its complete opposite and I'm surprised my chic lab doesn't relax her because she's not completely alone...

We work shift work too but it so happens that the way the schedule is (4 on 4 off) we are home a lot too. The boys are not home yet but we plan on crating them sometimes even while we are home too. ie if I'm in the shower or bathroom for short periods of time. That way they know it's not a bad thing for them to be in there. Is there any way you could have another dog walker for the days your current one is unavailable?

sippa20 ... I have found from experience that when a hound first comes home they will attach themselves to a particular human, following them throughout the house. It sounds like Ice has bonded to you, the human, so when you leave she is experiencing some SA. Remember, her world has been turned upside down and most times greyhounds have never seen a different breed of dog until they leave the track. Because Ice doesn't have a bond with your lab, is it possible to get the two of them to play together to help build that bond? That may help her feel less anxious when you leave the home. As Ice gains confidence in her new surroundings, her anxiety will disappear.
