I'm looking for any advice on how to deal with a barking hound. We are trying to get Froggy comfortable being left out of her crate when we are out, but she barks the entire time. Seeing that we live in a condo, we can't allow this to continue. We have been crating her, and my mom comes by twice during the day to take her on long walks, and not a peep while in the crate. However, at the end of the month my mom will not be able to help us out for a week, and our back up can only come around 3pm ( she goes in at 8am after two morning walks). With a wee bit of urgency we are hoping for some advise. We are looking into humane anti-bark collars (vibrate or puff of air - no electric). Any one with some experience, advice, best practice would be greatly appreciated.

Since she is quiet in the crate, I was wondering why she can't stay in there while you are out. Maybe she is still to new to be comfortable out of the crate without someone being there. After all they are used to being in the crate, it's their safe place. Does she have access to the crate when you are not there. I know Scully was always found in his crate for the first few weeks after I stopped putting him in there when I went out. He was put in his crate for about three months when he first came home when I went out as he is quite timid and spooked easily and when he was in there he was calm and just laid down and took a nap.
I know it's not where we want to see them, but I think sometimes some hounds take longer to make the transition, and I think that sometimes we try to rush them along. After all they are not used to being alone ever in their lives. Let alone being left alone out of the crate.
These are just my thoughts and I'm sure you will get tons of great advise here. Read everything and then you decide what is right for your baby...

How about putting Froggy in her crate with a Kong (as I don't believe she can damage that and it will keep her busy) and leave the radio on. I still put mine in their crates when I go out as they are usually tired after I walk them and I leave the radio on for their listening pleasure. It is worth a try.

Ahh poor Froggy. It sounds like she is experiencing a little Separation Anxiety. Here is an article re SA ... gives excellent examples on how to deal with this situation. Many hounds do experience SA to some extent when they go to their Forever Homes but it doesn't always show up immediately. When you go on this site, go to Behavior & Training, Emotional Issues and then Separation Anxiety. greytarticles.wordpress.com/. Good luck ...

We usually keep Frog in her crate when we go out. When we go to work, she gets two walks prior to going in, a frozen kong with peanut butter, and the radio is on. My mom comes over around 11:30 and again at 3:00 to take Frog for a walk. With my mom being unavailable for a week, Frog would end up being in her crate from 8am to 3pm, which seems too long. The first time we left her out on her own, a while back, she chewed a door in the 15 mins. Other tests resulted in no damage, but a lot of barking. We tested her today and it went really well. My mom left her out after they came back from the 11:30 walk. There was some barking, but she settled eventually. At one point, about an hour in, my mom peaked through the mail slot and could see a sleeping Frog on the couch. She was all lovey dovey for my mom, and my dad who came along for the 3pm walk, but when we came home she ignored us. This is a dog that oozes happiness whenever she sees us. I think at the end of the day it's us that has to get trained. she certainly has us wrapped around her paw.

There was a thread on GT last year about a girl that did absolute wonders on working with her solo grey and separation anxiety in her condo. It took ALOT of work, but eventually the houndie was happy to be alone. It involved soft background music, alot of alone training, long walks, good potty breaks, and keeping busy with a stuffed kong/bone. She also set up a video camera to watch what houndie did during the day when no one was home to discover and work with any triggers, like sounds in the hallway, or even her cat walking by. I wish I could find it for you for reference. The amount of work she did was incredible but it was a success. SA is treatable, but you have to put your mind to it.

Day two out on her own, and Froggy is doing amazing. We've spoken to our retired neighbour about barking, and he said that he has heard her, but that it only last for a few minutes after we leave. Woot, woot. We came home to a sleeping dog today who was happy to have us home, and no damage. We are going to start phasing out the 11:30 walk by pushing it up 1/2 each day over the next week. Knocking on wood that we continue with great success.

It shows you care about your neighbor and at the same time you find out how Froggie does home alone We did the same. The first time we let Dash alone in her crate for a few hours our neighbor told us "your dog doesnot like to be alone she barked the whole time", The first time she had to be alone all day I told the neighbors and asked to let us know if there was excessive barking. We never had complaints, My point is "good for you to let your neighbors in on this"

This can't be that easy!!! Day three, and no barking at all. Could be that she figured out what the bed is the one place we haven't allowed her to go. We caught the cheeky bum zonked out when we came home. Thanks Dashandus. We like where we live, so we want to make sure our neighbors are not bothered by anything within our control. They are enthralled with Froggy though and were very supportive. We get a lot of comments about her, and she has become the talk of the building Greyhounds are a breed onto themselves and she certainly attracts attention.
