Hi everyone This is week 3 of greyhound ownership with Jack (Nemo) and I could not be happier! He is such a great little (big) dude and he makes me laugh every day. I've been taking him to the dog park almost every day and he is super shy and timid, and just runs to the gate and looks back, as if to say "Mom, can we go?!" Any advice on how to make him more comfortable/get him playing a bit? I know it's early and can take months...but I don't want to stress him out! E.

You wouldn't happen to be going to the dog park in Mississauga on Heritage road?
I was there with Ghost and Chicago on the weekend and a gentlemen mentioned a young lady with a new black pup who kept going to the gate. Chicago was just adopted a couple of weeks ago.
If so you are welcome to meet up with us the next time we go. Might help him to be around other greys and we can talk about new grey ownership. That park can be a bit busy for him until he settles in with everything.
You can PM me if you like.
ETA. Congrats on adopting Jack!

You are correct time and patience are the only things |I know of that will help. My guy was super timid and would not approach anyone at the park. He's been with me a year now and still will rarely let anyone touch time. That is except that is for the other greyhound owners at the park and even then it was only after months of meeting them and their dogs.
Don't give up and I really think meeting some more greys will help, they actually recognize another grey. He may still now want to be super friendly but after meeting them lots of times he will interact more with them.
Keep in mind that timid is not always bad, they stay out of the pushing, showing and occasional growling at the park. It makes them look so well behaved lol
Good luck

Ya just give it time. It took Suli awhile to get used to things. After 8 months she still only let's 3 people pet her. I wish she spoke English so I could explain things to her

Haha yes Troy's Mom that was me! I lead him to the middle of the park and let him off the leash and he runs to the gate. This is how we are getting him to run lol. We'll do that about 4 times before we give up for the day. He seems to recognize other greyhounds and "woke up"a bit when he saw one the other day but has so far ignored all other dogs...great with people.

I definitely agree that greyhounds recognise other greyhounds, oh and lurchers and whippets too.

It took Froggy a few weeks to figure out the whole play thing. We took her to the pet store and bought a few things that she showed interest in, one of which was a frog that squeaked My fiancé and I would toss them around while she laid between us, and brought them outside as well. There were a few times when she'd pick up her frog and just carry it in her mouth while we walked. In no time though she figured it out and now she empties her toy box whenever I put them away. The first time she picked up a toy and played on her own was really exciting. Good luck with Jack. I'm sure he will figure it out in no time.
