Hi there. I am looking to adopt a greyhound. I live in the Ottawa, Gatineau area and would love the chance to socialize with some greys before starting the adoption process. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks

Hi welcome to the forum you are at the right place for it. To know more on greyhounds you can go on youtube and check alot of videos amd you can ask questions in here, you can also call bill and try to go at the kennel and see them even go for a help. You get the chance to react with the hounds and even fall in love with one of them. I wish you good luck in your way to a greyt life with a wonderfull hound. Quota's mom

Thanks! I definitely plan on visiting the kennel in the future. However, I was hoping to meet a group in the Ottawa area before hand...if at all possible.
Do some hounds interact well with cats and small birds?

yess it does but not all hounds get along with small criters even if it's a small dogs. i've been lucky enough that quota has no problem at all with small animals. i wish you to find the best dog for you that quota is for me. ask karen from camp greyhound she's also the best one with bill to give you all the advices that you might need.

I don't live in Ottawa but I just wanted to add a little something. Callie, who we've had almost a year is great with small dogs and cats. I have 2 at home and when we go visit my parents they have 2. So when we take a big vacation there's all 4 cats and 2 dogs, pretty crazy but she's really good with all of them. It's just a matter of picking the right dog for you and your lifestyle. Also, like it was mentioned ask Bill, he knows the hounds pretty well and will be better suited into showing you the dogs that best suit you.

I would check this website out since you are in Ottawa. There are adoption groups in Ottawa as well as Montreal, which are a lot closer to you than Bill is.

Welcome to the forum daphmemory! I too live in Ottawa, along with my 3 year old grey named Ace. We adopted him from GRA in Sept 2011 and our lives are forever changed:) You are welcome to contact me by email if you want to chat about greys or to meet my boy Ace.

We do have several members of the forum that live in the Ottawa area, I'm sure more will chime in.
There are groups closer to you, however some groups are not as simple to deal with as the GRA is. Some have odd criteria, many have long waits, and I don't know of any other groups in Ontario that allow you to pick your own hound out. It would be worth the drive to Bill's, IMO.

I would highly recommend a road trip out from Ottawa to GRA as well. There is currently such a wide selection of gorgeous, healthy greyhounds there. It would be well worth the trip!!!

I am quite certain that when the time comes, I will adopt from GRA. After having spent quite some time reading through this site, I feel that the hounds are well treated when the arrive and well cared for. This is important to me. Although this will (eventually) be my first hound, it is not my first dog. I have had two mini schnauzers who have lived happy lives up to the age of 15 yrs. I miss having a dog in the house and love the idea of providing a loving home to a hound...Thanks again for the tips and advice.
