This-here post of mine is not intended to question the feeding practices of anybody at all..... So it's one of those things that works its way into the vets' offices very quietly. I actually think it's a good thing not to get too hyped about it with your (I mean "one's") vet because it really does still scare a lot of them. ...it's the "bacteria" thing... However, I'm in and out of various vets with my and clients' dogs and I know from being told in those practices that there is an almost-reluctant changing in attitude happening. Some doctors who formerly had a huge kneejerk reaction to raw feeding are becoming less phobic because they're beginning to see raw fed "iffy" breeds with fewer skin issues, fewer weight issues, good muscle density and ok teeth. Stay the course, people, stay the course )

I have been feeding four dogs RAW (I call it BARF) for two years now. I would never go back. My dogs all love it and they are all healthier (skin, weight, teeth, energy) for it. Thanks for the link.
Yes! Stay the course.

I just happened to catch a show on TV very recently where they tested 100 samples of raw chicken bought from grocery stores across Canada and they tested them for bacteria in general but the main thing the show was about was antibiotic resistant bacteria. All samples had at least some antibiotic resistant bacteria on it and even the organic chicken had more than some of the traditional samples.
Note: This is just a comment on something I saw on TV not meant to stir anything up. FYI - I'm a microbiologist by training and I cannot bring myself to even eat sushi!!! I can't help it - I've seen too many things!!! lol

When I was feeding raw my vet was behind me 100%. I mentioned to a receptionist at another vet clinic that I raw feed and no longer give shots as they are all almost 12 and 13. She looked at me like I was a heathen and said she was going to excuse herself from the conversation before she said something nasty!! My boys were also blood donors while raw feeding and the evet who took their donations also had no issues with it.

I think the one thing you would want to take from that TV show I saw would be to be very careful that you wash your hands really well and anything the meat touches - that goes anytime you handle raw meat whether you are cooking your dinner or feeding your dogs. I'd also be careful with those that have little kids in the house that may crawl around on the floor where the dogs have eaten their meals. Certainly something to keep in mind.

Yes, thank you for the reminders. I totally agree with you that we want to be really careful about cleanliness - I find I'm easier in my mind about it if I feed everybody outside in their designated spot and the food prep is done in the basement laundry tubs where there is a handy bottle of Javex/water premixed in a solution. I'm glad I didn't see the tv show...

Vets are changing their minds because they're losing business when they give people a hard time about it, it's really that simple. And as sandysfarm says, the proof is in the pudding, they're seeing dogs that are in great health and complimenting owners on their care, and when they ask what food the owner is using they find out the dog is raw fed. It's hard to back pedal after than, although some do try. The vets, along with their staff, have been very strong indoctrinated against raw, so it's a tough jump for them. Some are indeed making it, which is wonderful. And now some of the large pet food companies are getting into pre-made raw, still not a great way to feed from what I've seen of the ingredients, but that will mean less flak for people who chose to feed raw. Bacteria is everywhere. We live in the microbial world - and no one in this house has gotten sick in the last 20 years from raw feeding the dogs or serving meat to the people. The bacteria phobia is an old argument. Here's a little more on that: awesomepaws.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=information&action=display&thread=7
