I just noticed today that Royal Canin donates food to GRA.
Does anyone on the forum use this brand, and if so, would you recommend it?
How does it compare to ProPlan or Nutro in quality and price?
Thanks. Mom to Allie (formerly Slatex Peaches)

Royal Canin is one of the best like Eukanuba. but they're expensive if you compare to proplan. royal canin as iams, purina, and proplan they are very active in shelter and rescue donation. Hill's does too but not as much as those one. the more you give the more you get to be seen and the more you gonna sell. but I will tell you there is no better food than the food that fit to your dog. no matter what brand. mine didn't take proplan so i'm in special diet with probiotic cost more but it fits her. pet food is a market but your dog IS NOT. I can tell you that 'cause i worked in a petstore for twelve years when i was studying. hope you got some answers.

I tried Summer on all the expensive top-of-the line foods like Blue Buffalo and Taste Of The Wild and consistently got refusals to eat. One day, I noticed the Royal Canin banner on this forum and thought, what the heck, nothing else has worked. WELL! -- I bought the Medium Breed "Adult 25" formulation and have never looked back! For the first time since we got her 1 1/2 years ago... I have a chow hound!

FYI Here are ingredient lists for each (generic adult formulas, I know they all have different ones). I only posted the top few ingredients...took out all the vitamins and stuff to make it shorter!
ROYAL CANIN ADULT MAXI Chicken meal, brewers rice, wheat, chicken fat, brown rice, corn gluten meal, barley, natural flavors, dried beet pulp, brewers dried yeast, fish oil, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, glucosamine hydrochloride, vitamins
PURINA PRO PLAN (chicken formula) Chicken, barley, dried egg product, chicken meal (natural source of glucosamine), brewers dried yeast, brewers rice, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), brown rice, oat meal, pea protein, dried beet pulp, natural flavor, fish oil, salt
The ingredients really aren't all that different in terms of the amounts of meat, grains, etc. and I am pretty sure the Purina is cheaper (?). There are a ton of foods, and there are others around the same price range with a lot more meat. But...some dogs just don't do so well on certain foods. I have always been a big believer in switching things up every so often to ensure a dog doesn't develop boredom, or intolerances to eating the same thing each day. You could always try a rotation between different types to see what works!

Thanks everyone for your replies. Thanks Redhead for listing the ingredients of both brands. Not too much of a difference I want to upgrade Allie's food and I don't know if I should give her better quality dry food or try giving her raw. I often see a pair of greyhounds at the dog park and their owner feeds them raw. They are thirteen years old, and have the softest, plushiest fur I've seen on a greyhound. He tells me that Allie's fur is coarse and to change her diet. Another greyhound owner who visited today told me the same thing! She feeds her dog raw. I give Allie two Omega capsules daily for her coat, but I guess that isn't doing the trick. Right now she is on the Salmon dry food from Costco. She was on ProPlan when we got her but her gas problem almost forced us out to the street. I suppose I could alternate between high quality dry and raw and see what happens. As Redhead mentioned it's probably a good thing to rotate between different types of food.

We feed Acana Grasslands to Top and Stella. They like it but we have to travel abit to get it. Just found out today that a pet store in our town sells Royal Canin Large Breed. It's a big decision to change our kids' food but I'm thinking we'll try the Royal Canin. We would really like to change to raw but can't figure out how and where to do it in our house.

I wouldn't use the Large Breed formulation, IMHO. Although these greys are kind of big... their heads and jaws are not large breed size. Large breed kibble is a good size for them to choke on. Your pet store should be willing to bring in whatever kibble you want, in whatever formulation you want.

You have to watch reading ingredient list...if you notice the #1 ingredient of proplan is Chicken, and the #1 of Royal Canin is Chicken Meal..from what I've read if it says meal it isn't as good. Really though you just have to find what works for you pup, Bright was on proplan for the first year I had her then one day she started getting horrible poopies on it. She then did great on Orijen regional red, then they changed the ingredients (added more protein) and she didn't like it any more. after an exhausting trial and error period She has no been on Taste of the Wild High Prairie formula for some time and is doing great on it. Nice poops nice coat, and eating both meals most of the time (she gets about two cups twice a day. At her last checkup her vet said she looked great, and was a perfect weight for her size.

Chicken meal is just chicken with the moisture taken out - you want to see it in the top 3 ingredients. Dog food companies use all sorts of tricks to make their food sound good! My favorite is what they call "splitting ingredients" Here are my 2 favorite dog food sites; www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/www.dogfoodscoop.com/

My greyhound has had the "poopies" since I brought him home. I have tried adding rice to each meal and sometimes he is ok but most of the time he has the rins or very soft stool. He is eating Blue Buffalo since he came home. He loves it and eats every scrap of food even the rice.
Any ideas if there is a food out there that will stop the runs.

I tried so many foods with Gigi over the first few years looking for something that she could handle. A few years ago I finally found Acana (after trying all the Orijen foods first, but they were too rich). She's been eating the "Pacifica" mixed with some of the "Ranchlands" sometimes because she gets sick of it. BeauBea seems to be able to handle Acana as well. But I know that one thing doesn't always work for all greyhounds! So sometimes it's trial and error until you find one that works. GOOD LUCK!

I found with my greys if I sprinkle a bit of the plain, sugar free metamucil on their food for a couple of days things sort out. It's good for constipation in humans but the runs in dogs.

Make sure there's no internal parasites before you figure it's his diet.
