Hi Well... Ive heard of counter surfing....but Ive caught Cleo twice...actually up on our counter nibbling away at left over food!!!! She like a gazelle!! Although funny the first time, the second time she was eating a pot of spaghetti and sauce from the pot! We had company and ate outside and I thought she was out there with us....realized she wasnt...and suddenly my pooch has a saucy face...lol...but it didnt agree with her tummy! Please give any training suggestions for this habit.....i need to stop it pronto! And yes i know i have to keep food off counter so i dont entice her.....but cant i train her to know the counter....and certainly jumping up right on it is a definate no no??? Next problem....after having Cleo for 2 months now her poops still arent firming up....shape but really soft. I have her now on Medi Cal food from our vet...and still not working. Its been chicken so far.....should i change her to a lamb diet and try it....shes also scratching and has dry skin which ive been giving her fish oil pills for. Any thoughts on either issue would be SOOOO appreciated!! Cleo the counter surfers mommy....

Wow, I would love to see pictures of that! Not that we have ever had problems with Knox on the counter but we have been putting up a baby gate at the kitchen doorway anytime we leave the house for any period of time or have food left out on the counter (after we have made supper and are eating outside). It may not work for your gazelle who may opt to jump over the gate but it works to keep Knox out of there. Also allows the cats to eat without him hovering.
I have been feeding Knox Medi Cal Lamb and Rice from the pet shop. Most of the time his poops are good. Sometimes soft, but not too bad. I just went to Costco last weekend and picked up the Kirkland Lamb and Rice, hoping for the same results.
How are the fish oil pills working? I just noticed the same this past weekend on Knox. His skin is definitely starting to flake just above his tail.

I cannot imagine Maelle EVER doing that. Heck, she will barely even go in the kitchen! I've heard of others greys doing it, and saw some youtube videos of it, but given her personality I don't think she would ever do that. I have no idea how to stop that, but I think I do recall someone else on here having that issue. Hmmm.....good luck with THAT! lol!!!

OMG I just watched that video! I think from what I can tell, I bet there is a window to the left of the camera that he can see the driveway. He looks like he is jumping up for a better look so he can see when they get home! I'm glad Dino doesn't do that! but he refuses to jump on ANYTHING. he has never been up on a bed or furniture. he doesn't even try. If you try to get him to, he runs away! lol! just a couple of days ago he learned how to jump into the car. for the last month since we got him, we were having to lift his 80 lbs into the back of our suv! NOT EASY! lol. I'd start with the front feet and then lift the back end! lol! but he STILL will not get on the furniture. Guess I shouldn't complain. He does counter surf though, so I would also be interested to hear some suggestions to get him to stop. he also LOVES to get in the garbage. which is another sore point with us. he listens to me when I'm there to tell him to stop...it's when we aren't around that it's a problem. and try as I might, when I'm getting 2 kids out the door i do occasionally forget things on the counter or to lock the garbage up...

Our Gypsy stands on our kitchen table and looks out the windows. We have managed to get her to knock it off when we are home.I know she still does it when we are away.So much for my training methods!I can't,for the life of me, get her to stop.Someone proposed getting a smaller table or island. We decided against that because we are afraid she might fall.
I'll admit we do find it comical.

No advice on the counter jumping.
As far as the poops...get a fecal done...treat her for worms. Even if her fecal seems normal, I'd treat her anyway. Both my vets recommend Drontal Plus

Hello,
From what I have heard from others is that the female hounds are always keep in the top crates at the track while the males are in the bottom.
Hence, when they get adopted they are pretty use to and comfortable hoping up on counters. One method I have heard to break the habit is to string together a bunch of empty pop cans, startles but does not harm when they jump up and pretty much deters them from jumping up again.

I can't help with the counter surfer, we were lucky with Leo and he is pretty good about it.
As for food, we had lots of problems with Leo. We tried 5 different types of food from less expressive to the really expensive vet diet. Once we knew there were no worms or parisite we worked on a new food. We ended up going with Global pet foods house brand, Natures Harvest hpoallergenic. It is grain free and is duck and potato based. Leo's poop was firm after the first meal and he has put his weight back on. It has worked wonderfully for us.

Hahaha! That video is priceless Azi was a counter surfer when we got her. I found an effective (and highly entertaining) way to curb that behaviour .... Grab a couple of empty beer or pop cans (rinse them) and pop a few pennies inside. Tape a couple of cans together for maximum noise factor. Them tie a string to the cans and bait the other end. Be sure you hound doesn't see you set the trap or she will associate the end result with you (which won't help your relationship). But, be sure to secretly spy on the process for maximum entertainment! Azi is no longer interested in the scary counter food. Good luck! -mikey

The Kathleen Gilley article addresses this issue well - it's in the newbie section.

i am all too familiar with the counter surf blitz like that too i was gonna suggest the punnies thing but someone already did the other thing if she really doesnt get it is take her to the edge of the counter/table and gve her a little bop on the nose so she knows its bad. not hard just a little tap. the penies worked for me but my friends shepherd needed a good bop. he begged at the table too. used to rest his head on it when you were eating. heres a good shot of my silly goose the only thing was she didnt know how to get down so she cried all day until we got home and had to lift her off. she also knocked the toolbox off the counter what a mess she made. all for cat food

Don't ask me why but it works. Got this off a petstore employee whos' mom has a bulldog. One "small" teaspoon of ed smith pure pumpkin. Not the kind you would put in a pie. just pure. I store it in the fridge in tupperware container with holes in the lid or it'll go moldy. I put it in a seperate container at meal times and he thinks its a treat. LOVES IT. I can always tell when the kids laze out and don't give it to him cause the stool is runny. too much or too little can make the difference, so adjust to you greys' needs. Hes' been on it for a year with purina pro plan beef, which bill told me when dexter chose me to go home with. This works with all breeds according to co-workers i've told, Even one guys' cat.. ??
