I was in the pet store today buying my new boy a toy for when he comes home on saturday and was just wondering... Does anyone here use those raised dog dishes? or are they not worth the money? They are pretty expensive and my boy is a tall guy...Just wondering what everyone else does

I use a used Milk Bone Pail -- Michel really likes it -- just never got around to replacing the stainless steel raised dishes -- her collar clanked on it and spooked her when we first got her and she wouldn't go near it again and wouldn't eat so I just put her dish on the pail, she ate and was happy.

We have raised bowls, it's kinda funny watching my cats drink out of Jack's water bowl.

I bought one of the inexpensive tall round waste containers at Walmart. I turned the round top on it upside down and the bowl fit right on top of it. It seems much easier for them to eat when the bowl is elevated.

We had a couple of old round buckets about (forget what was in them originally) but the dog dishes fit in just fine. They aren't aesthetically pleasing - but do the job and we hide them in a corner otherwise.

Yes we have raised dog dishes and Maelle is just fine with them. I think it's worth it. How much were the ones you saw though? I remember seeing ours somewhere and being surprised at how inexpensive they were, around $29 I think? We got ours through an rbc employee rewards program so ours was free. I believe Costco or the Costco website has them for $29.

I don't have raised food or water dishes for Leo, who is very tall. He does have to bend his knees a bit while eating but supper lasts about 2 minutes if that, so it's not a big deal. I've heard that raised food dishes increases the chance of bloat; I'm not sure why, it could be that they eat faster or the study that's based on could be a fluke, I think it was only one study.
The main reason I don't have raised dishes is that I used to always feed him in his crate so that he'd associate the crate with good things. It seemed to work well, he'd see go into his crate when he wanted his food and he liked his crate, he'd go into it on his own throughout the day too.
Leo doesn't like slippery floors so we have his water in the living room near his bed to make sure he feels comfortable enough to drink as much water as he needs (he's not too messy a drinker, it works well) and we also feed him in the living room with a mat. He sometimes eats (and sometimes drinks) while lying down!

Holstein needed raised dishes but Lola and Ramone just eat/drink off of the floor, well off the ground these days as I toss their meals outside. Holstein was just very tall and couldn't squat down very well.

Summer has raised dishes. Since she doesn't wear dangling tags, an accidental clunk is not an issue. Also, my raised dishes are ceramic so they wouldn't have the "ringing" sound of a steel bowl. I have heard that both raising and not raising (!!) can increase the chances of bloat so I'm ignoring those studies until they make up their minds. Instead, I will use common sense and not feed her before or after exercise and make sure her water is restricted after exercise. I really don't think whether or not the bowl is raised would make that much difference bloat-wise -- but raising it can make quite a difference to the dog's dining comfort.

Bill always says if the dogs were uncomfortable with their food on the floor they'd lie down to eat.

All four of mine each have a raised feeding station. I got them at Walmart (the large size) for $24.00 each a couple of years ago. I do feel the raised stands make it easier for them to eat and drink after trying both floor and raised feeding.
But honestly, you don't need to spend the money on a raised stand unless you want to, you can use a bucket as some have already, a small plant stand, a milk crate, etc. Or what about looking for a reasonably priced one on kijiji?

Bill always says if the dogs were uncomfortable with their food on the floor they'd lie down to eat. I'm not sure about that. I think that would be equally awkward and uncomfortable. Laying down to chew a bone looks natural. Laying down to eat kibble from a bowl doesn't. It doesn't? Looked fine for Cora when she had a hip injury: I feed mine on the floor. They do just fine. ETA: The ones I feed in crates are sometimes lying down before I bring the bowls. They almost invariably stand up to eat, although occasionally (rarely, actually) one will opt to remain lying down.

Laying down to chew a bone looks natural. Laying down to eat kibble from a bowl doesn't. Leo sometimes chooses to eat while lying down if he's feeling lazy. Sometimes he'll be lying on his bed and he'll actually kind of pull himself closer to the food bowl, kind of creeping along (while lying down!) to get closer to the food bowl so he doesn't have to bother to get up!

Nixon's bowl sits on a small plant stand ...maybe a foot high...from Walmart. It was pretty cheap. The water bucket (yes...'bucket' - I have three large dogs!) sits on a plant stand that is about 6" high.
