I was reading a post today discussing how, when a hound settles in he slows down in consuming food like a vaccum; so, I have to ask "When does this happen!!!..lol . I have had my pup for almost 2 years. He eats twice a day and has inhaled every meal in about a minute. He is fed raw, he eats outside mostly, and when he comes into the house, he immediately slides his nose along all the counters looking for more. If you crumple a bag downstairs and he is upstairs in his bed, he will be at your side in seconds flat. Anytime the fridge door opens, just look down...he will be there. He will do anything for the word "cookie" or "treat" .Apparently, this is quite noticable since I have had more than a few people tell me I'm not feeding him enough. Well, he gets the most nutritious variety of raw food, about 2lbs a day, not including fish, marrow bones, and healthy treats. (He eats better than I do!). I have , on occasion felt he might have a tape worm of some kind. My Question is "Surely there must be other Greys who react to food this way? .....Right?

I thought you were describing Jasper. I've wondered about a tape worm myself. He's exactly as you describe your hound.

Has Brook been to your house? She's little, but an eating machine.

Teague is the same way he would probably eat a whole cow if I let him! He will gobble down a raw steak in a few seconds and be looking right up for more. A lot of people think that dogs are a healthy weight when they are actually overweight.

Dexter's like that too, although I don't get too many comments about how I can't be feeding him anything, mostly because I've talked to 90% of the people along our usual walk route. Still, he'll eat enough to start putting on weight and still look for more so he has to be fed what he needs and nothing more no matter how much he wants it.

Sigh. Summer eats very delicately and is choosy. My previous non-grey dog was also picky so I guess that's my lot in life. LOL!

Man, you so much as LOOK at a plastic bag in this house, and our two are on you like they haven't seen food in months. They stand there expectantly, waiting for something delicious, even if they've abandoned their dinner just in case I have something better!
Seriously, Joe won't even touch his dinner if I am in the kitchen messing about. He will wait to make sure I don't have a more tasty offering than whatever he is having.

Corinna is this way even with just her kibble, she eats every meal like she hasn't had food in days. I told my DH if Cori ever doesn't eat even one meal she will be straight to the vets because something is wrong. Wally is the complete opposite. Food means very little to him, most days it take him a good 15 minutes to finish his meal, if he finishes at all (Cori has no problem helping him out though )

Gordie is on a raw/kibble mix and boy is he a hoover when it comes to food.
I have to admit he's on a diet now the vet an I both hope he'll lose about 5-8 pounds though he's sitting at about 90 pounds (racing weight 79 pounds) and we hope to get him to about 85 pounds. He gets lots of exercise now thanks to his fenced yard and hyperactive boarder collie girlfriend so we're well on the way to the 85 pound goal.
He used to be straight raw but at the vets recommendation we cut back to 60% raw and 40% diet kibble. he also gets raw treats twice a day (usually whatever bite sized fish is on sale).
I still get comments about "feeding my doberman" or how i'm "starving my lab"
Seriously though he inhales his food even after almost three years home.
My other grey slowed right down after about 6 months and became the ultimate fussy eater so, maybe it just depends on the hound.

We have one hoover vacuum hound here (I'm amazed at how much he loves his kibble) and one picky eater. Max the hoover hound is totally food obssessed and as Greytluck said if he were ever to skip a meal he'd be off to the vet immediately. Our picky girl just seems to eat when she feels like it and has been that way for years.

My BF calls Summit the "food mongrel". If he hears one of us in the kitchen opening cupboards or anything, he will more times than not get up off his bed or the couch and come trotting into the kitchen hoping to get a morsel to eat. If I'm filling Kongs he's waiting to lick the knife. He also knows that dad leaves tidbits on his plate, so when I collect the plates after dinner and head to the kitchen he comes trotting along to see if I'm going to scrape anything good into his bowl.
