dHi Everyone! I want to remind everyone that martingale collars should NEVER be left on your dog when unsupervised. This appears to be not commonly known which worries me tremendously. If you want something to have on your dog at all times, purchase a tag collar but be sure to remove the martingale before crating or going out. Your dog tags can be hooked onto the tag collar (which is typically 1" wide without a d-ring) which will avoid potentially serious accidents.
This nearly happened to one of our group members today! Because of this I am offering tag collars, fully lined in silks, velvets, cottons, trims all for $10CAD. Please order ahead if you'd like to pick them up at the picnic Saturday. Check my Ebay store and/or website for sample fabrics and send me a PM if you'd like to place an order. I highly recommend tag collars for your hound's safety and your peace of mind.
I'm going to ask Bill & Freddie to perhaps include a safety tips pamphlet upon adoption for the first time (or even not first time) dog owners. We'd all hate to see something happen to one of our loved ones just because we didn't know.
Please remind everyone you know....mention it to new people on the forum.....spread the word.
Jenn

Thanks Jenn Zookie is doing well. It's like nothing happened. So everyone knows, his martingale got stuck in his crate today and we found his crate 1 foot forward from where it was when we left, and him, collarless. He had gotten out of the collar, but bent the ring nearly in half. Luckily he is doing great, and he and Nina are collarless. I'm debating tag collars, but am scared to have anything on them at this point! Thanks Jenn for all your help and advice. Just a side note, despite what the collar has been through and the ring bending, the stitching is ALL still completely intact... just a testament to the strength of Jenn's collars!

Keep in mind as well that a toe can easily get caught in those large 2" "D" rings.
My kids wear a 1" tag collar (no sliders, fitted to their size). I have also had success with just a tag necklace, and there are some pretty fancy ones out there!

I have also had success with just a tag necklace, and there are some pretty fancy ones out there! I'd still recommend staying away from anything that could potentially get caught (necklace sounds like it might). Tag collars are your best bet for safety. I also want to recommend to everyone that has newly adopted a Greyhound something worth a read. It's produced by The Greyhound Gang and is an excellent source of information. www.greyhoundgang.org/ Go to About Greyhounds and then at the top of the page choose Greyhound Guide. You can then either download or print a copy. I've had so many PM's from people who had no idea to remove martingales which I find very frightening so for sure, I'll be bringing along a selection of tag collars (no d-rings) for purchase at the picnic. Thanks for reading this thread everyone!

another good solution is to uncrate your dog! LOL but really this is a serious issue, we only wear tag collars in the house. (the dogs that is)

Most necklaces are made so either they pull apart (at a clasp) or they break. I had a leather one that pulled apart and I also had a hemp one that would untie under too much pressure.

Just to add.. a few weeks ago, Dave rolled over onto his side next to a vent. His tags actually got stuck in the vent. He went berserk, lifted the vent cover clean off the opening and ran frantically around the house. I was home at the time (it all happened right in front of me), but I often think about what could have happened to him, had one of us not been home. The weight of the vent cover could have easily hurt him over time (its weight pulled his martingale REALLY tight within seconds). In the end all was ok, but it would have been a horrible way to learn a lesson had I not been around.

I'm going to bring along a bunch of print copies of The Greyhound Gang's Guide to Greyhound Ownership and will hand them out free to anyone interested. It's a good read with valuable information! I spoke with Claudia this morning (she is the GG) and got her permission to print and distribute.

I wish we could uncrate them. I don't think they're ready for it yet. When we move to a bigger place in september, I think we'll try.

when we just had Zooks we tried uncrating him, and he always chewed something and pooped on the floor. we tried toys, music, the works. he just wasnt happy outside of his crate. Now with Nina, shes very mischevious so I would be worried about uncrating her, but I think Zooks would be just fine. The reason we're going to wait is because our place is so small right now, they would have full access to the living room, kitchen, dining room and hall, and we could only close the bedroom and bathroom doors. There's too much they could get into (especially Nina). Because our place is so small, we have lots of things we can't keep away from them, especially with Zooks being so big that he will jump and reach onto a tall bookcase to get something he wants . They're great, and they seem quite happy crated right now, they don't cry when we leave in the morning, but they whine when we get home, I think just because they're happy to see us. Once we have a larger place, we can uncrate them in a room where there isnt much for them to get into, and then slowly give them more access to the whole place. Our apartment is just too small to move things so they can't get into it . I would love to uncrate them though, growing up, none of my dogs were crated, so I find it hard to shut them in there every day.

could you leave them muzzled and uncrated in the bedroom with the door closed?
