I just wanted to share something funny that happened on Sunday (although it wasn't funny at the time!)
I took my sister's greyhound Gibson to Victoria Park on Sunday. He is a very easy-going dog and he's like a magnet to people, he heads straight for people and leans on them to be petted. He does have a habit of jumping which is getting much better, but he still tries to do it one in a while. He doesn't jump on people with his front legs like most dogs do, he kind of leaps up into the air in front of people, and I think sometimes his back legs get off the ground too because he really gets up high, he's quite athletic!
Anyway, on Sunday, a couple said "hi" to him so I let Gibson go up to them. I'm not used to his jumping so much, since that's one thing Leo doesn't do. Gibson jumped straight up in the air right in front of the woman and of course I wanted to make sure this flying 70-something pound dog didn't hit her. I should've stopped Gibson before he was in the air, but he's pretty fast and as I said I'm not used to the jumping. So when I realized he was going up into the air very close to the woman, I tugged on the leash to keep him from hitting her. I guess it was too late by then and Gibson was way off the ground so I threw him off balance, because he feel down FLAT on his side onto the ground!
I felt so bad for him, but I could tell from the way he fell he wouldn't have been really hurt; he fell onto quite a few inches of snow, and he had a warm, padded winter coat on. He layed on his side for a minute, probably with the wind knocked out of him a bit, and probably a bit shaken. Since Gibson is very easy-going, I knew he'd be okay mentally too after a minute. I let him lie there for a few seconds, then he got up, shook himself off, and he seemed okay.
I was kind of in shock too and at the same time staying calm for Gibson's sake. The woman was just dumbfounded. I hope she didn't think that I did that on purpose (I told her that I didn't and from my reaction I think she realized that I didn't, not that there's any way anyone could do that on purpose, it was such a freak thing)!! Then she said to Gibson -- "You'd better be careful or you could break a leg!" LOL! I just found that so ironic, with Leo being at home with a broken leg!
Anyway Gibson was little uncertain about me after that, I think that HE might have thought I did that on purpose but I gave him a few treats and after that he was totally okay with me again! Poor guy, I hope at least after that he gives up the jumping!
