Chicky has become quite comfortable going downstairs on her own now & often heads down there after her dinner for a snoozy before we head out to the farm. The signal to Chicky that I'm ready to go is me grabbing an apple & carrot out of the fridge to take to Maverick (don't ask me how she knows I'm doing this when she's downstairs). As soon as she hears this she usually starts barking her head off at the bottom of the staircase & I have to tell her that yes she's coming with me & to get her butt upstairs to get her collar & coat on so we can go.
Well today there was NO BARKING, NO DOG AT BOTTOM OF STAIRS.....I called her name, nothing ...my heart jumped to my throat....I ran downstairs thinking that she must have choked to death after going downstairs after her dinner & I just never heard....but there was no sign of her on either of her beds in the bsmt. The door to the bsmt bathroom is always closed as is the door to the bsmt bedroom. The laundry/furnace room is blocked off so only the cats can get in (litterboxes kept there). I rushed back upstairs to check her den....no sign of her. I panicked thinking how she could have possibly gotten outside...but that was where she must be. I opened the door into the garage & hit the button for the overhead garage door and at the sound of that came excited barking from downstairs! I ran back downstairs (practically falling my legs were going so fast) and the little brat-fink was in the dark laundry room. Apparently she managed to get her way in (the blockade was not moved so she must have jumped over it or climbed under it??!) but couldn't figure out how to come back out. No doubt checking for any "tasty morcels" in the litterboxes & was hiding when I was first looking for her as she knows she is not allowed in there My heart was pounding so hard from my initial fright but I couldn't get mad at her when she pathetically looked at me to get her out of there & let her come to the farm with me. Shortened my life by a few years!!
