I have a 6 year old grey who is in need of teeth cleaning under anaesthetic and several extractions. I am living in Toronto and the vet noted 10 teeth that are candidates for extraction. The cleaning (including anaesthesia and IV) is quoted at $877 with the extractions ranging from $51-359 per tooth.... the grant total for the recommended cleaning and extractions is $2500. While I most definitely will be having his teeth cleaned, I am a university student who cannot afford $2500.
My question is whether this is an amount similar to what others have experienced? I am interested if anyone has recommendations for vets in the Toronto or London area that may be more reasonable?
Thanks

E-mail Camp Greyhound, Karen Ward <karenjeanward@gmail.com> as she is very knowledgeable regarding greyhounds and their teeth and she will give you some recommendations where to get these procedures done. Please feel free to mention my name, (Sandy Easterbrook) - I had to go through this with my greyhounds also - greyhounds don't seem to be blessed with good teeth. Hugs to your pup.

In my experience, $400 is the minimum for a dog to go under for a dental, and then tooth extractions are extra. I'm surprised they were able to give you an estimate, as they usually don't commit to that prior to the dental (need to investigate to determine what teeth really need to go and what can be saved). Would you be willing to drive somewhere to save some $$? There are pretty good dental vet clinics out in the West end that are a little more budget friendly. I'm sure more people will chime in to offer their advice. I remember reading a very similar thread not to long ago. Search a bit to find out what others have recommended. Good luck!

Also, once you commit to somewhere, I would put him on Amicar. Starting the morning of the dental surgery, 500mg, 3 times a day for 5 days.

Took our six yr. old to the vet due to very bad breath and I notice alot of plaque buildup ... at first it was to be 8 teeth extracted but ended up upon closure inspection to be 18 teeth!! Apparently they have just over 40? The total came to around $500 (sorry don't have exact amount while sitting here), they have a set fee for the first 10 and then extra for any thereafter. Not quite as bad as I thought at first hearing of others having to spend well over $1000. Our vet 'Millen Road Animal Hospital' is located in Stoney Creek ( just past Hamilton right off the Q.E.W. niagara bound), they have done alot of greys, it all went well. Dropped her off i the morning and picked her up later in the afternoon.
