Yesterday, Friday 20 March Lottie was digging up the soil in my yard. She'd been doing this for a few days and making me laugh since she'd come back into the house with a lump of soil balanced on her nose! Anyway been doing a bit of digging and both her and Minkie were lying together side by side on the dog bed. I went inside the house then back out again and saw something red on the dog bed. What is that? I thought. Then it dawned on me that it was blood. I looked more closely and found 3 other 'pools' of blood on the concrete slabs. Lottie had gone upstairs and onto my bed at this point. I looked at the stairs and there was blood on alternate steps. I checked her over. There was blood on all 4 paws and a smear on her chest. I finally found a small wound on her front right paw inbetween her toes on the webbed bit. Rang the vet explained the situation. The blood in the yard was deep and there was a lot of it. I took her in as an emergency. The vet nurse found the wound I had and thought she could stem the bleeding by putting pressure on in. As you can imagine Lottie was not at all happy having someone squeeze her paw when it was hurting. This went on for several moments - with the blood still flowing. There was a trail of blood in reception and then all over the consult room floor. I'm thinking all the time that this bleed isn't going to stop and that she should have stitches. A vet was called, she took one look at the floor and said 'she needs surgery'. Turns out that Lottie had severed the artery in her toe. They stitched it and Lottie should have come home today, Saturday. However when she was taken outside to toilet her wound started bleeding again. So she's had to stay in for another 24 hours. She's hardly eating at the moment. I've been told that if the wound continues to bleed she'll have to go back into theatre for more surgery. This evening when I called for an update I was told that there had been no further bleeding since this morning. I have to call again tomorrow morning, Sunday for an update. I am missing her a lot. Bless her. In the meantime I dug over the area where she had been digging and found a few piece s of slate. I'm guessing that when she was keenly digging she caught her paw on the sharp side of one of these pieces. I've taken all the slate out and anything else that might cause another injury. And I've put loads of pots, statues etc onto the soil so she can't get onto it. She's on crate rest at the moment. Might be having to buy a crate.

I'm so sorry to hear about Lottie's accident. No wonder there was a lot of bleeding with her having severed an artery in her toe. I can imagine Lottie will be on total bed rest for awhile ... poor little girl. Hugs to your baby.... get well soon Lottie.

Dear Lottie: Hugs and scritches have been sent over to you as we are so sad that you had an artery cut on your toe while digging - something that you really had fun doing. We hope that you are feeling brighter to-day and keep us posted.

Poor girl. So innocent the task of digging in the dirt and such an unexpected outcome. And Lottie has already had a rough go last year with that embedded glass. I feel for you as it is so very upsetting when these things happen to our pups. Take care and I hope Lottie feels better and heals quickly.

Called RSPCA today as instructed, and although Lottie hasn't bled since yesterday morning, Sat, they want to keep her in for a further 24 hours to give her crate rest and keep a close eye on her. She was given a sedative yesterday to lower her blood pressure as the higher blood pressure would have increased her bleeding. She hasn't had to have another sedative today which is good news. She's on pain killers and antibiotics. They did not say whether her eating had improved and I forgot to ask. Anyway although I'm sad that she's still in the vets it is the best place for her as some have said and there is no way I'd be taking her out until I get the ok from them. I do not want to be taking her home and having her wound start bleeding again and then have to take her back in. I wish I'd taken a photo of her with that lump of soil on her nose - it really was hilarious. Here's a photo of Lottie and Minkie taken on the day before/same day ? b4 she hurt herself. and here is Minkie waiting patiently for me to come out with Lottie at the RSPCA. She was SO excited to be at the vets! Yes really. She LOVES everyone - including other dogs. I could say she LOVES cats but that would be in an entirely different way!

The up-to-date report on Lottie is encouraging. Hopefully you'll have her home in no time. And I love how Minkie is waiting so patiently at the vets. Hugs to Lottie .....

So very sorry to learn of Lotties accident. Here's sending hugs for a very speedy recovery! On another note, I am so very envious to see live green plants on your patio, oh how I yearn for that! M

Lottie was given the ok to come home today. I was allowed to walk her for 5 mins. She is settled. I have given her the tramadol and antibiotics. She had a pigs ear to welcome her home, as did Minkie of course. She's eaten well this evening and has chilled out happily from the moment she came home.
Fingers crossed that she will continue in this vein. Check up on wound on Thursday.

Thanks everyone. I took Lottie to the RSPCA yesterday, Thrs for a wound check. I'm so pleased with her because she's left the bandage alone apart from two sneaky quick licks (!) when I did the loud noise and no and she stopped. In the past when Lottie has had glass in her front paw she's damaged both legs by licking like crazy. She licked at the site of the shaved leg where they put in an intravenous line and took all the fur off over a 4 inch section. She has left both legs alone this time much to my relief. Anyway. Saw a male vet I'd never seen before. He put a muzzle on my lovely Lottie! (outraged owner!). She had some swelling whether the wound was but the vet said that it was helpful in this particular instance since this would put pressure on the wound and reduce the likelihood of the artery bleeding again. I've never had that said to me but it does make sense. Anyway. Wound is clean, no infection. New bandage on with floppy surgical glove to get us safely to car park! Fingers weren't tucked in so Lottie was tripping up on them so I asked for band to secure them. I've walked her since vet appt on slow shorter walks and she's enjoyed the walks. She's just been collected by my best friend Fran along with Minkie as I'm do the technician's job tonight for the Talking News for the Blind. It's only my 3rd go at the tech's job on the weekly news. It's scary stuff but I enjoy it a lot. There are 7 teams so everyone does 1 in every 7. www.btna.org.uk/We record on the site where 'Doctors' is filmed which tickles me as I walk past the 'doctors surgery' each time to get to my building. Doctors is a daily soap transmitted on terrestial tv. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006mh9v

What a shock that would be.
One thing I would suggest is look into Amicar (Aminocaproic acid)... given she was bleeding for so long without clotting and then started to bleed again post surgery, she probably could have benefitted from it. It helps their blood clot when it doesn't seem to want to let up. I use it on all of my guys pre- and post-surgery as well as when we have injuries (I keep it in their medicine cabinet). It also helps to reduce bruising.
Get well soon Lottie!!!
