Chase is doing very well getting used to the idea that he is a pet now. We've had some problems with the house-training part. He's not so great at telling us before he needs to use the washroom, so it's been a bit trying. Any tips on training would be appreciated.
As well, we've got a major leash puller in chase. We work on it everytime we go for a walk..but it's slow going. Again, any suggestions would be a huge help.
thanks jen

Hi Jen! So much to say, so little space to write it in For the housetraining, is he doing it immediately after eating? Is he doing it late at night? You should pick up his water bowl early in the evening if that's the case. Is it right after coming out of his crate (if crated) or just after waking up from a nap? Are you taking him out on a schedule so he knows when to expect going out? On the leash pulling....when he pulls, just stop walking. It may take you a long time to get from point A to point B but he'll catch on that pulling means he won't be going anywhere. If he's really bad, a harness is a great tool to use. Good luck and asking for tips is always a good thing!

Hi Jenn,
thanks for the tips, i definetely try and stop walking when he pulls...takes us about an hour to walk a kilometre...but i'm hoping he picks it up. He pulls so much that the skin under his chin is starting to look a little raw.
I've been trying to record when he goes for a pee or poop, but he's all over the map with timing. Sometimes it's 3 hours after he eats, sometimes it's 45 mins. i'm hoping now that i'm back to work this week we can get a schedule under way.
Thanks for the tips!

Keep him on a schedule. These dogs are VERY used to routine. Their lives have been run by one ever since their birth. Feed the same time everyday (two or three meals, not one big one). Don't limit his water, unless you Absolutely have to. Mine have access to water 24/7.. I even have a water dish in my bedroom in case they get thirsty at night. Take him out at scheduled times. 9, 12 (if you can come home at lunch), 5, and before bed (add as many others in there as you'd like). When you do take him out, make sure he's not just marking (that little squirt of a pee they do). If he's marking when he goes out, he will not be emptying his bladder at all. Sometimes a short walk will do the trick. If you catch him peeing, and ONLY if you catch him peeing, say, using your best, stern, I-mean-it voice "NO" and then take him outside... when he pees outside, praise like heck!!! Dance, rub and make him feel good that he went pee-pee. Trust me, your neighbours will think you're nuts, but Chase will get the idea! If you don't catch him in the act, there's not much you can do but quietly clean up the mess and go about your day. There is no point in correcting him, he doesn't remember what he did

Hi Jen -
For the house training part, absolutely keep the pup on a schedule. Sy is walked in the morning when WE get up (his walk isnt done until he pees), is fed his 1st meal soon after, walked around noon-ish (we make sure he poops!), walked again at around 3pm when the kids get home (again we walk until he pees/poops), is fed his 2nd meal at around 5pm-ish, walked again around 6pm (to pee and if we are lucky, poops) then the final walk around 10pm-ish (we make sure he poops or we dont go home). This is Sy's schedule, actually it's our schedule and it works.
I'm sure you guys will find a schedule that will work out - as long as you find/make/steal one. ;D
As far as the leash pulling, we've taught Sy to "SLOOOOW" when walking. when we tell him to "slow" we 1) use the voice-of-god and 2) tug a wee bit on the leash. it is now to the point where we just use the VOG and not so much the #2 part. occassionally, we still use both but he did learn.
I remember Freddie telling us to have him pee & poop first in the backyard FIRST before the long walk. This way he doesnt sniff around and pull every which way while walking. Well, even after that Sy still did. oh well.
Be very patient with the pup and yourself. We've had Sy for about 8 weeks now and he has been the best-est ever!
Lots of advice from everyone, i know and can be overwhelming. again, it will be your schedule ultimately and make sure it works for you.
Good luck and keep us posted.
Lisa

Hi Guys! Thanks SOOO much for all the tips! All this info is VERY helpful, especially to a first time grey owner! Actually, Chase is doing much better! He's not panting anymore when inside, he's very relaxed, taken to his bed and being a greyt couch potato! Had one more accident in the house, we figure it's when we open a new part of the house to him to explore, and i think it's more marking his territory. So we watch so that we can catch him in the act of peeing on something and haul him outside to show him where to go instead. Other than that, we've started our schedule and so far so good! yea! Leash pulling is getting better too! He's realized that pulling makes me stop in my tracks, and i don't even have to say anything anymore, he'll back up on his own when he sees that i've stopped. So i think it's just a matter of time. Now all we have to work out is his love of chasing people on bikes, yikes, i've gone for a few trips when he's decided to take off. But, in time, he'll get it! Even tho he's a young pup, just turned 3, he's showing his obedience, i'm so glad, i thought maybe we'd have a bit of a struggle with chase, but he's such a good boy! Thanks again! Jen

Hey Everyone!!!
My name is Amanda and we just recently rescued Uncle Wick whom is 4. He seems to be a very great dog and is adjusting very well. His separation anxiety has definately subsided. He is getting so much better with the kids and ourselves. Now I have the same sort of problem as Jen when it comes to house training. We have had Wick for a month as of July 6th. We have tried to put a schedule into place walking first at about 6:30 - 7 am depending on what time he decides to wake us up at. Feeding at 8:30 am and another walk before I go to work at about 11am. He gets another short walk when I get home around 2 - 3pm and fed again at 5pm. Another walk at around 8 - 9pm and again before I go to bed around 12am. Now the PROBLEM is that when we go out we find that he has peed on our chair that he has decided to claim as his marking area or on the kids bedroom floor the kitchen garbage can and various other places. We have had him for just over a month now and it is very frusterating when your house begins to start to smell like pee because we have carpet. It is also so frusterating because we try to keep on schedule the best we can. For example, today he had his morning bathroom break and then we went out for just about 2 hours, when we came home he once again peed on our chair!!! We have caught him in the act a few times but that doesn't excuse the smell, I mean these pees aren't small little ones, they are very long and smelly human like pees. I NEED HELP!!!!!! Please, anyone with ANY suggestions to offer would be so greatly appreciated. I don't think that the water is a factor, but I don't understand why he pees!!! I told my boyfriend when we come home from somewhere we should do a little "inspection" of the house as he follows along. If he has been successful and not peed he gets a treat in our appreciation. I tried that a few times until he peed again today. We decided to throw away our chair and we bought a new one. We are REALLY afraid he might decide to pee on this one!!! We are moving in September and we are buying new furnature and if he pees on it I honestly don't know what I am going to do. IN NEED OF DIRE HELP, Amanda & Wick

IN NEED OF DIRE HELP, Amanda & Wick Have you had him checked out medically? Often the peeing problem can be as simple as a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). If he is okay medically, be diligent. When you catch him peeing, say No (but don't yell at him) and then lead him outside and let him pee there. When he does go outside, get really excited for him and praise him a lot. If you don't catch him doing it, there is no point to saying anything to him... he doesn't remember.

What the heck is belly band?

Belly band is a wrap that goes around their belly and stops them from peeing on things. They pee in the band instead. They do not like having pee on themselves so it discourages peeing inside. Rule out medical problems FIRST!
