Tease has adjusted really well to home life - every day she seems to become more at ease and is learning how to become a housepet. I have her sleeping out of the crate at night -she really seems to enjoy sleeping on her dog pillow. I would really like to start training her - sit, down, come etc. and I was wondering if anyone has any ideas how to start or what is the best way. Walking on a leash is no problem. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I used Retired Racing Greyhounds for Dummies when I trained mine. When teaching sit, do not push down on their bums to get them to do so. You can hurt their back. I preferred the "tuck and fold" method. It worked really well on all of my kiddos

I took Boo to his training about 3 months after I got him. There was enough new things for him to get adjusted first just around my house and in my life before I wanted to subject him to something new again. For one, I didn't want him to go into "information overload" mode, second, I needed to establish my relationship and bond with him. After all, during training he HAS to listen to me and TAKE commands from me. It worked greyt for us. Charger was never trained as he is still (after 5 years) nervous and easily spooked - he just has to look pretty. Shera is home trained from day 1 as she came with an amazingly natural aptitude for obedience and has a submissive/trusting personality. Krissy

I used lots of treats, I bought little ones then broke them into 4 or 5 pieces. Everytime they do what you ask them, give them a treat. If you say "Zooks (or his name) come here" and he comes, he gets a treat, then if you say "stay" he gets a treat, then "sit" another treat, etc. Zooks learned how to sit really well within maybe an hour or so because I kept trying with him. Now he knows it makes us happy to see him sit, because we praise him when he does it for us (or give him treats) so when he wants our attention, he sits for us! Just tonight I brushed him and told him if he was good he could have a treat after, and I finished and went to get the swiffer to clean up (we have hardwood floors) and I came back, and he was sitting in his crate waiting for his treat! He also sits in the hall and waits for us to put his leash on him to walk him. You can also use treats for getting them used to using the outdoors as a bathroom. We had some trouble with Zooks at first, so we started giving him treats when he went outside. For teaching her how to come, with Zooks we called him into our bedroom (around the corner from the living room) and gave him a treat, then said "stay" and walked into the living room. Once he stayed there for maybe 15 seconds or something, we would say "Zooks, COME" and when he came we would give him his treat. Also, make sure you use the same words, like COME, and not COME HERE, or Come here Tease, or Tease come here. Try to use the same thing each time. She'll probably learn quickly, you'll be surprised! We also bought Retired racing greyhounds for dummies and dog training for dummies. Both were helpful.
Good Luck!

willow and greely started training a few months after they became adjusted to their new home. they are both so different. greely picked up on everything easily and seems to really enjoy doing training, or maybe it's just the treats he likes so much. willow found the trainers couch and heads straight for it every time we get there. it's the cutest thing to see her sitting there like a princess and we all laugh every time. when it's her turn she does all the commands but in her own sweet time and then heads straight back for the couch again (ha ha truly a couch potato)

Can anyone recommend a trainer for the greys. I saw a few mention in house training?

I trained Tigger basic house manners when we got him, but we are putting him in obedience classes in the fall. He sits with perfect ease when tempted with a strawberry timbit from tim hortons.
