My 10 year old girl Chelsea has recently developed a cloudy, raised area near the edge of her iris with an ulcerated bit on top that could be seem with the stain at the vet. The very thinks it's something called pannus which it's normally seen in German shepherds. but she's not sure about the ulcer bit. .. and the normal treatment for pannus is steroids, which can't be given with the ulcer orit will get worse. it's possible that she got this by scratching at the pannus.
Has anyone experienced this in their greys before? my vet had never seen it in a greyhound. I'm taking her to an opthomologist on Monday. Currently I'm giving her a pain pill because it's bothering her quite a bit, and antibiotic drops. ..

the quick answer is that the go-to guy is Dr Goldstein, 416-782-1031 - southwest corner of Eglinton and Westoverhill just off the Allan (east) They have a daily clinic walk-in from 9 - 11 and it's nothing but eyes. Goldstein's a great guy. Call ahead because he travels a bit but his partner Klys is fine too You can also book a timed appointment in the afternoon if that works better - less waiting but not as interesting.

Thanks Sandy. I'll keep that in mind. The ophthalmologist today said that she's got an indolent ulcer, which is basically an open wound that won't heal. Sometimes it's from trauma and sometimes it just happens. She's going in for surgery on Wednesday! It's a pretty simple procedure that they can often do without anesthetic, but hers is a bit too large and she'll need to be put under. Cross your fingers for her!

Lots of hounds have pannus and it's treatable. KJW's daughter has a hound with pannus, maybe she'll spot this post and have some information for you. I've never had a dog with it but, from what I've seen and read, sunshine is now your dog's enemy. And try the Greytalk forum -- there's lots of conversations on there about pannus.

Thanks for all the happy thoughts!! The specialist actually just said it was indolent ulcer. He didn't say pannus, but I forgot to ask. Will ask tomorrow when I take her in to have the ulcer fixed. The new news now is that her bloodwork shows thyroid hormone below detection limits, which I think is even low for a greyhound. Since this can lead to complications under anesthesia, she's only going to get a tranquilizer for the surgery. I'm actually happier about this. I wasn't looking forward to having her anesthetized..

Well everything went well and Chelsea is home and resting. The poor thing hates her e collar and has wiggled out of it twice. any tips on how to keep it on a dog whose head is smaller than her neck? ??
I think she's feeling a bit sick as she's been whining a bit and actually threw up once. poor girl.

no tips here, merely support! perhaps tighten the draw strings on the collar?

Good news - she's been feeling much better! One of her drops was making her eye itchy, but now that she's healed a bit, it doesn't bother her anymore. She's back to normal Chelsea
