We adopted a 5 year old male, Solemn Oath, from Gra back in mid-october. Bill told us that he had been with a family and had been returned. He is a wonderful, loving and well behaved dog. we don't ever crate him and we have never had a problem with him in any way. we walk him everyday, he's a great walker and he has never not wanted to go for a walk. however, 4 weeks ago i was taking him for his daily walk and he froze on the drive way and wouldn't walk. so for the past 4 weeks, he has only gone for about 4 walks. i was just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or could give me some advice. two nights last week, he didn't even make it to the driveway...he froze on the porch. something in our neighbourhood has freaked him out and i don't know what or what to do. i feel really bad for him because he wants to go out so badly and gets so excited when he sees me getting my coat and his leash. he is still getting some exercise as we have a big backyard he like to run in, but i know he really misses his walks. HELP!

Is he uptight once you get past your driveway? (when u actually make it past your driveway... ) Maybe the more times he is walked, the more his mind will be put at ease that he will be ok. Avoiding walks might be furthering the problem in his mind. But that's just my opinion - Roman's never had that problem, but he was absolutely terrified of the elevator floor in my building recently because he slipped on it. I made him get on it over and over again (well, also because he's scared of the stairs too so the elevator's our only option! ) and eventually he got over his fear. I'm sure others will have better advice, but I wish u luck!!

when he freezes try walking him in a circle to get him to move forward again (works with horses too!)

I try to walk him everynight. I try to pull him to the left and right and the only place he wants to go, is back to the front door. he just stands there and his heart beats super fast and his tail goes straight down. once or twice i have gotten him to the neighbours house, but then he realizes we're not infront of ours anymore. at this point he starts to look around, gets nervous and pulls until we get to our house.

I called Bill 2 weeks ago and all he said was something has scared him and not to worry. i have also spoken to krissy and have tried everything she suggested, but still no changes.
our guy also goes through phases of not eating and throwing up yellow bile when my fiance goes away on business for a couple days, everyother week. so i contacted the vet last night and i asked about putting him on an anti-depressant. has anyone had to do this? she said it helps them with anxiety.

Have you tried a harness instead of a leash? No reqason really, just throwing out a suggestion. Maybe work on it with him slowly. Tackle each level a couple of times over a few days, then move to next step when he seems like he would allow it.
If he likes treats (or you could use overly happy exaggerated praise) you could go as far as the porch and praise him. Then go back. Next step to the driveway, praise. Next to the sidewalk, praise. Then in front of the neighbours, half a block, a block. Work up slowly to help build confidence. Hope it helps. Poor guy should enjoy a walk not dread it. Let us know how he does over the next while.

Hi Romansmom
Sol has been walking very well, lately. Thanks for asking. the halti is so great! i have to give him a few good tugs down our driveway and usually to our neighbour's, but then he is good. after we get off our street i remove the halti and he walks's great! i think it's somethin on our street. i took him to the walk at springbank today and after about 10 minutes he was doing very well.
But this morning when Brian left for school, he got upset when he saw him packing his car. he started to shake a little, his heart was racing and his tail went down. he was so upset. i then gave him his breakfast and he didn't want to eat it, so i hand fed him 4 handfulls and he ate out of my hand...then i guess he was hungry so he ate. he's so silly!

Zooks does the same thing when we leave him sometimes! He will shake, and whine, and his heart goes crazy! He also refuses to eat. In fact, I don't think he eats at all when we aren't home. He even tips over his food bowl sometimes and makes a huge mess! But as soon as I come home, he eats right away.

Sheri, I really sympathize with you here. Digby was like this during the winter whenever I tried to put his booties on, an sometimes with just his coat. I still have no idea what his problem really was - maybe the booties hurt him? maybe he was just being stubborn? but i know.. it's sooo frustrating because they just stand there and stare stubbornly. sometimes he would only walk in a certain direction and freeze if i tried to turn him around. treats made little difference and same with having other dogs around.
we live in an apartment and so he HAS to be walked so we ended up having to walk him without booties even when it was really cold and I could tell his feet were cold but there wasn't really another option. good thing this winter was pretty warm.
Sorry I don't have any suggestions to help you because nothing worked for me, but I feel for you and I'm glad the halti's working better!
