I recently went to my Dr. for more allergy meds. I take a cocktail of nasal spray, pills and eye drops daily from March/April until Oct/Nov every year since I was 15. He was telling me that Allergies are more prevalent in Southern Ontario and seems to be worse in people who are native to S. Ont.
One of the biggest lures for me to Greys was because they were relatively hypoallergenic. I do notice I get contact reactions (rashes where the fur or tongue touches my skin) to them when I'm at my peak season (summer) but it's usually controlled with my meds. In the winter, I don't experience any allergies to them and I'm medication free.
Both Rene and I have allergies to pretty much anything with fur/hair but for the most part, our pups don't bother us.
Anyway, do you have allergies to your beloved pet(s)?

Hi Jen, You might have read in a recent response of mine that I do suffer from alot of allergies. Like you, part of the appeal for me with greyhounds is that they tend not so set off allergic reactions the way many breeds do. Also, like you, I do notice some local reaction(s) where I have been licked by our boys (also if I give them a kiss on the forehead ). I don't take meds since my allergies to them are tolerable. However, I do have asthma (since I was a baby) which can be aggrevated in extreme allergic reactions. I have meds for asthma, but dog dander does not bother my condition.... Cat dander? Now there's another issue all together! I also have chronic rhinitis.. A fancy word for people who are always suffed up... No meds for that either, and the boys don't make it any worse than it was initially. By the way, I noticed that my allergies/asthma actually got BETTER when I moved to southern Ontario (considering the smog here, I was initially surprised). Winnipeg is really dry and dusty, and alot of pollens, molds and dust (which affect me more than dog dander), go completely airborne!... Also, could be the fact that I'm more allergic to the tress that are native there than here... That's another story...

Funny you should ask. I have had the occasional bout of hay fever while living in Vancouver - the weed broom out there is like ragweed here. How surprised was I to find the stuff actually for sale here! About the time Jackson came to live here my eyes started getting itchy. It has progressed now to daily antihistimines, goopy eyes in the morning and last weekend wheezing a couple of days. Hmmmmm..not sure if it's just 2 dogs or a combo of the 2nd dog and now seasonal allergies kicking up. I never had a problem with Molly, my previous dog, who was collie, shepherd and husky with lots of shedding and dander. Go figure.

I've had allergies (which trigger asthma flare ups) my entire life - we've moved around alot prior to living here and this is the best place for my suffering so far. I will admit though that this year has been particularly bad - I'm blaming mother nature for the fact that she can't make up her mind on what season it should be from one week to the next - but luckily mine are no worse with our grey and our cat around.

I totally agree. My allergies have been worse so far this year than I can ever remember.
