My fiance and I visited Heather over the weekend to discuss the option of introducing a greyhound to our family. I researched different dog breeds about 10 years ago, and decided on a greyhound - since then have been doing more research, talking to greyhound owners, reading this forum, etc. In that time, also acquired a bulldog, Lola (my avatar), who is now 4. We brought her along for the ride, and met Barricade - who my fiance and I fell in love with. Lola was ambivalent - but he was quite keen on her! Even kissed her on the face.
We aren't able to bring him home right away, as we have a wedding and honeymoon coming up, but are anxious to do what we can to get prepared. We're looking at a mid June pickup (which feels far too far away right now!!)
So, I thought I'd start with a quick introduction and a few questions....
Is there anyone else living in the Niagara Region?
We're looking for a crate (sadly both our crates are only 36" in length), that we can start him off with. Eventually we'd like to allow him limited roam of the house (which is what Lola has now), but would prefer to start with a crate (in a separate room from Lola) until he gets comfortable.
Thanks I look forward to sharing photos and stories!

Congratulations on adopting Barricade and welcome to the forum. Barricade sure is a handsome boy, I'm so excited for you. There are a few of us from the Niagara area, in fact, I'll send you the link to one of the girl's facebook page. She is not a member of the forum but has put together a very informative facebook. She just adopted their new greyhound about 4 - 6 weeks ago.
As for a crate, I know the TSC Store puts on crate sales fairly regular and I do know of some used crates that NAFA (Niagara Action For Animals) are getting rid of. Their head office is in St. Catharines. A small donation is all they are asking for. Anyway, if you are interested, let me know and I can give you NAFA's email address. I saw the crates today but don't know the sizes. I'll PM you with that Facebook address.
So you certainly are going to have a busy few weeks ahead of you ... congratulations on your upcoming wedding and honeymoon. I love your bulldog, Lola, I'm sure she and Barricade will become great friends.

Congrats on adopting Barricade! He is definitely handsome, and has such a sweet face It sounds like he has a little crush on Lola- it's amazing how these hounds choose their family! Also congrats on your upcoming wedding and honeymoon - so many exciting events for you in the next few months, how wonderful! We just returned our crate for Teia to Ren's Pet Depot last week, or else I would have given it to you (she hasn't used it once since her homecoming). Wherever you decide to purchase your crate - ensure they have a good return policy in case Barricade doesn't use/need it (it sounds like you have your share of crates already, lol!). Make sure to keep us posted with pics and stories when Barricade comes home

Thank you everyone for the replies, I'm so excited! We plan to visit him again next weekend (just have to let Heather know when we're available, and make sure it's convenient for her). angelollie - if you have the NAFA email address that would be great. I'm hoping that he won't be too interested in the crate, but will see how it goes. I did join the facebook group, and look forward to meeting some local greyhound families

Well you have certainly done some research (10 years worth)! Congratulations & welcome to the forum. Thankfully for you, the time between now & Barricades homecoming will fly by as it sounds like you are going to be extremely busy! Good luck with the upcoming nuptials & looking forward to seeing lots of pics of your newest family member.

We picked him up today! Finally!!!! And, met a lot of great people The car ride was uneventful - we took him and Lola for a walk around the block, then let them hang around the yard for a bit. He gobbled down a quick dinner, and of course right afterwards is when they decided to start playing! So, instead.... he's resting in his crate for a bit, then we'll let them play. Hopefully the transition continues being this easy - my fingers are crossed, but I'm not going to hold my breath. *edit: Of course, they have to congregrate in the worst looking part of our lawn!! *eyeroll*

So glad to hear he is finally home. He looks great with Lola. As for the yard, not to worry once he starts digging holes the whole thing will look the same. Only kidding they don't all dig lol.
He sounds like he is settling right in, keep the pictures coming so we can all see his progress.

They actually did play together today, and Lola was great with him! He's very comfortable in the yard, and a great walker (he's so responsive!). He did mark in the house twice, but both times I caught him in the act and corrected. He seems quite a bit less comfortable inside, but it's only been a day

What a handsome boy. Glad he and Lola are getting along so well. He will get used to being in the house. Everything is new to him and it will just take a little time. Have fun and enjoy all the new things you are going to learn about each other.
