It chills me to read this. How awful for you and Bella. I hope and pray that the healing (both physical and emotional) is quick and uncomplicated.
I can't begin to tell you how unnerved I feel when I hear about,or see, dogs off-leash in a shared, common area...'accidental',..'one-in-a-million', or not... the situation can potentially have horrific end-results. I send supportive thoughts and wishes for whatever decision you come to in pursuit of safety and fairness for all.

Is she drinking? You don't want her to dehydrate.

This is an absolutely horrible thing to have gone through for both you and Bella! I hope she heals up soon and I also hope YOU "heal up" from the trauma of it all. I know I would be positively stressed out and unnerved by it. I would certainly report the issue! I would let the people who own the bulldog know that you feel obligated to do so but I would NOT broach the subject for a couple of days as they NEED to pay for any further vet costs. This will never negate the suffering both you and Bella have to deal with now, sadly, but you should not have to pay the costs in cash for their negligence. They get a mark from me for offering to pay for the first vet costs without being asked but I would say they know they are in the wrong by letting that dog run loose. This does show they may possibly have integrity but if they willfully left that bulldog off a lead, then they certainly don't have any sense.

Oh dear, I am hoping your Bella a very speedy recovery. I work for a vet, and recommend that if you haven't already, pls call them to let them know she doesn't have an appetite. Both tramadol and clavamox are very safe, though w/ any meds, side effects and/or reactions are possible. After my grey's run-in w/ a fence that ripped open her side, she was on both of those meds as well. Both do better given w/ food, but especially so w/ the antibiotic. So if she isn't eating, continuing to give her the meds on an empty tummy may be making her feel more nauseous, which in turn makes her not want to eat... As for the actual dog bite, did you get bitten as well, or just Bella? If you were bitten, this becomes much more serious than it already is. If you were not bitten, you still need to report this, if you haven't already. I have no tolerance for uneducated people owning a dog that they clearly shouldn't. I understand the actual owner of this dog is away, but if that is the case, his dog should have been left in the care of someone that is able to manage it properly...ie leash only comes off once the dog and person walking it are both safely in the house. I see WAY too often, walking just in my own neighbourhood, dogs being off leash in school yards or public walking areas, or on owner's front properties...or @ the end of a flexi-lead while an owner chats away on a cell, not paying attention. Big dog, little dog, it really doesn't matter...all are potential dog bites waiting to happen. I do not hesitate to chastise 'owners' who place these dogs in these situations...and heaven forbid 1 of these dogs goes after my Wyn...look out!

Bella, Bella, our hearts are aching for you and your owner and we feel the pain that both of you are going through. I know that your owner will make the best decision on your behalf to the dog/owner who did this to you. This is such a tragic story and I am paranoid when I walk my pups as I see all kinds of incidents waiting to happen i.e. we encountered a dog off leash in the park last week and I stood there screaming at the owner to leash his dog - he looked at me as if I had three heads!!! He said his dog was "well behaved" but that does not hold water for me as you just never know what might "set him off" and I know that my grey will not hold back. Please give Bella lots of hugs from us and keep us updated. Lots of hugs to you too.

OMG, I can't believe how horrifying this must have been for you both. Definately report this to the spca and perhaps ask them for their thoughts. Many positive thoughts and prayers for you and Bella.

Thanks everyone for the support and get well wishes. Paul was not bitten although he did take a bit of a fall (he's not sure how, in all of the confusion, he can't remember). The owner is having her trainer 'assess' the dog although if this was the first time, I'm not sure what that's going to do. The husband (who is away right now) is coming home early to deal with the issue. Scarletta - I agree about pay first, broach subject later. It's hard enough having to watch Bella go through all of this and it would be even more stressful having to worry about vet bills...
We're on day #4 of not eating - her last meal was Friday night. Paul made rice and chicken thighs tonight and she wanted nothing to do with it. She has been drinking a fair bit though. Getting out to the bathroom when Paul carries her down the stairs and then she makes her way around the backyard. I suppose those are good signs given what she's been through. Paul is bringing her back to the vet tonight because a couple of stitches look like they've broken - he'll ask about different meds too. We'll keep you updated....Danielle

Back from the vet - some different pain meds (Gabapentin to go with the Tramadol), an appetite stimulant for a few days (actually is an anti-depressant), and another antibiotic for a secondary infection (temperature is up and bubbles popping just below skin sort of like gas - really weird). Her eyes are a bit jaundiced so they're checking her blood too. I don't like all these different medications but at least they're only prescribed for a short time.
I keep hoping that things are going to improve but it's been a tough road. We also have to do 'physio' to keep circulation up within the tissues. All these things that I never thought I'd have to know!!! Danielle

We would like to thank everyone for your support and kind words, we will work hard to help our Bella, I have made a link now to photos, they are pretty graphic, sorry for that. I hope as well that she will eat, maybe today. I will be bringing an air horn with me like at the hockey games if Bella recovers, I let my guard down for the last time.... s1030.photobucket.com/user/pdmckirgan/library/Bella
