I saw some TV show about them when I was in highschool. It was something about adoption. All I can remember is the picture of this big skinny grey sleeping in classic dead thingyroach style. I have to admit that I thought greys were too skinny. Years later, and after several years of living with a dog lover, we decided that we wanted a dog. We couldn't find anything suitable at the humane society, so we found some grey adoption sites. We got Hope from Greyhound Circle of Friends. We wanted another one within a few months, but they would not adopt us a second at the time. We found GRA and brought home Freeride Mankato, but after some full out dog fights in our appartment, we brought him back. We let Hope pick which one she wanted, so a week later Hotwire came home with us. I am stuck on the greys forever. And as you can tell from the pic, they love each other.

We had much the same experience. Except we got a Labrador Retriever first. Remy is great (the Lab). We knew we wanted a second dog and that it would be a rescue dog of some sort. We researched alot of breeds (Border Collie, again Lab, English Springers). Then our dog trainer said have you ever thought of greyhounds. Like you we had heard the stories but thought "they are huge and need alot of room to run" and at first we were scared off by the fact that most resuce groups require a fenced yard which we don't have YET...but then we were told about Bill and GRA. We went first to the web site it took my husband about two seconds to decide on a colour he liked (brindle). The next day along with our dog trainer(who is also a very good friend) my kids and I went out to GRA to pick out our new family member. We looked at many beautiful and lovable dogs. Long story short this incredible, red (not brindle), really tall boy caught both my kids and my eye. Bill let him out and HE just chose us. Tyson (was Teton, didn't like that name) is adjusting well other then a little problem with roundworms which we are dealing with. He tries to play with our Lab but he runs so much faster and the house isn't that big. He loves walks and is very good on a leash. He has a love/hate relationship with the squirrels that live in our trees. But already he is such a part of the family (only had him since Sept. 8). Just yesterday my son asked when did we get Tyson and I told him a week ago, he said "really it seems like he has been here for years, just like Remy".

This is an interesting thread. We've all got our stories Ours starts back in Mar. 2002 Cathy had been thinking about adopting a greyhound for a while, but had never said anything to me. She then saw a write up in the LFP, in Jan. 2002, about a family from Strathroy who had adopted a greyhound from GRA, and mentioned to me that maybe we should see about adopting one. I had never thought about a greyhound. The only greyhounds I had ever seen were just in pictures, with their tails down between their leg, and I thought they were just skinny and wimpy looking and I didn't want a wimpy dog! She worked away at me and we decided that maybe in the summer we would look into it. Anyway, in Mar. 2002 my delivery job took me between Tillsonburg and Ingersol. Cathy was with me one day, and we had a half hour or so to spare, and she said why don't we try to find the GRA kennel. We didn't have the exact address with us, but we knew it was on Daniel Rd. I said OK we would find it, but only for future reference and we weren't going in! Well we finally found the place and stopped out front. We got there just as Bill was letting the greys out for their morning turnout, and he saw us stopped at the road and waved us in. We looked at each other, do we go in. I said, well we're here so might as well go in, but only to look! We talked to Bill for a few minutes at the gate to the kennel and said we were thinking about adopting, maybe in the summer. He said that was all right, but would we like to come in the barn now? So we followed Bill in as he was putting a bunch back into there crates, which just happened to be at the very last stall. One of the greys that he was putting away was a big energetic fawn boy with a big curl in his tail, who just wanted to jump all over us and give kisses ( nothing wimpy about this dog! ;D) His name was Nauti and his eyes followed us all over the kennel. We said again, that we were thinking about adopting, maybe in June, and Bill said we would be back before then We left and went on about our business, talking about the greys, and Nauti in particular. We stopped for lunch in Woodstock, and decided that if we wanted to get a greyhound, and we both liked Nauti, then we had better go get him before somebody else did. So when we finished lunch we headed right back out to the kennel and told Bill we wanted Nauti, and he said, what took us so long to figure that out ;D Now 4 years later we have 5 greys, each one with their own story, and we haven't regretted a minute of it! Thanks Bill!

Ater losing our Plott hound mix Ben last November, my husband and I were heartbroken and lonely. I had met retired greys in Georgetown and loved the quiet nature and thought it would be a good fit for us. I surfed the net and chatted with Circle of Friends. We arranged to go and meet Joanne, and find out more about the dogs she had that needed homes. We met the female she thought would be good for us, and asked to see 2 more she had kenneled down the road. We saw Chiva( Ozark Lightning) and it was lliterally love at first sight! We had adopted a mixed breed young female from the local OSPCA 2 weeks earlier and they adore eachother! They go everywhere with us. Camping, to friends homes for dinner etc. Life is complete!

My husband was set on getting a Great Dane...I really did not want any pets...(was attacked by a dog when I was younger) so I thought I could change his mind if I took him to the "All Pets Show" at the International Centre in Toronto early this year. I thought if he saw the different breeds up close and personal, he might think twice...My husband has never had a pet and neither did I.
We walk in and the first information center we see is about the Greyhounds. A very friendly volunteer spent at least thirty minutes or more talking to us about the retired greys and their temperment. There were about 5 or 6 greys there...just standing quietly, letting all passerbys and kids pet them...Their temperment was so calm and kind...It was love at first site...
We went to the Great Dane information center and the young lady was not as informative or helpful as the greyhound volunteer. She told us to read her book and then call her if we were interested.
We went home and decided we wanted to adopt a grey. The most important reason we decided on a grey was there is a strong support system. Being new to adopt a sweet furkid, we wanted to be able to find others who have already been in our newfound excitement and who could provide support and guidance. Since we were new to the whole process of adopting and caring for our grey, we wanted to make sure we could get answers that are not from a book but from experience. BTW, we went to the bookstore and bought all the recommended greyhound books we could find.
We surfed the internet and came across the GRA site. We called up Bill and made an appointment. Bill was so wonderful and helpful...he suggested we take two because its easier but we wanted to start off with one...Being new adoptees and newlyweds, we thought we should get settled first...It was a wonderful learning experience for all of us...as my husband has mentioned we adopted Meme this weekend and we're thinking about a third when we get a bigger house...
BTW, Rocco was the exact opposite of what I read in the books...

We did an event every spring and GPA-Md had a booth next to ours. My wife would always come and pet the dogs. We then decided to vol. for the group. After just a short time vol. with the group we decided to adopt a greyhound once we got married and got settled. So, we adopted our first greyhound Zeus. We just feel in love with them and now we have a total of four and when we move we'll adopt again. Zeus his first day with us. After a few weeks.
