Not exactly training and behaviour however....just need to know if anyone out there has a better way of cleaning off feet/ankles/legs in this muddiness....We towel them at the door, that's several towels per day and still have to "swiffer' behind them Our yard is fine, it's just those last few feet at the back door that fills their paws with muck.... Do note however....that Top and Stella are SO SMART that they now just lift each foot by themselves for a wipe! Yes, I suppose we should get patio stones up to the door............

I think you are doing the only thing you can, sounds like they are brilliant for having learned to help you with the chore. I find that a damp towel then the dry one works well. But that is double the job and maybe they won't want to help out that much. And double the laundry and you have to keep the damp towel damp.

I have a Paw Plunger filled up and kept at the back door. I love it! pawplunger.com/ETA: I have it in the medium size.

Get a bale of straw (straw, not hay) and spread some on top of the mud. Works great. You might need to find a rural feed store since garden/craft stores don't usually have any at this time of year.

Straw is the only thing that's ever worked at all here. And the dogs love playing in it, especially the broodies. Usually you can find some on kijiji.

I use straw as well, it really helps soak up the excess water plus it provides a footing over the muck. And my gang loves to play in it too. My last bale of straw cost $6.00 at a feed store.

I use one of my sons toy pails. LOL Just put a little bit of water in it and swish each foot around until it's clean then towel dry.

Hrrmm. Some good ideas. We just take them to the front yard for a quick lap (grass is good there) Gets most of he mud out.

just a thought, but what about putting down a carpet remnant over the muddy area until it dries out.

Be very careful with wet swiffers. I have been told that the cleaning solution is toxic for cats - and possibly for dogs as well, if they happen to lick it, or lick their paws having walked on it while wet.

What great ideas......can't wait to get rid of the mud. I just use a wet face cloth on the paws before Dingo comes into the house. I then rinse and repeat as needed. I keep the wet cloth hanging up under the sink and use the same one all day....starting fresh in the morning.

I too use the straw and it works great, especially in spring and fall. Right now my entire backyard is a mud pit (literally...our maple tree allows no grass to grow) and it is terrible...I would be going out of my mind without the straw.
I have to say, it is funny to read this post and notice that those of us with more than two houndies use the straw while others with fewer hounds use wet cloths and/or pails of water! Trust me, I have tried the pails of water or towels...doesn't work so well when you have 5 houndies barrelling into the house all at once! lol! But when only one or two go out, they will wait at the door and obediently lift their paws for washing and wiping. They learn very quickly....

Straw! What a great idea. And you are right about the one or two hounds, they wait so nicely to be washed. I had to laugh at the thought of four or five barrelling in all at once. LOL

Thanks everyone...we are going to try straw AND pail of water.....
lotsoffreetime....I WISH we could have 5 houndies...if you've got straw for 8 feet, I ask my hubby, what's the difference between 8 and 20 feet? Didn't go over so well
