Hey everyone!
I'm glad to see the message board is back up and running. I just wanted to tell everyone how Zooks is doing. He has changed so much since we first adopted him. His personality has really started to show. He has learned how to sit (he can't get his butt right down on the ground, so we don't make him sit for long, just for a second to get treats, and when were putting his leash on him). He also understands so many more words than I thought he would. Who says an old dog can't learn new tricks! I'm still in school right now (in exams at the moment) so I'm home with him a lot during the days, and I talk to him, like "Zooks, why dont you go lay in the bedroom" and I swear he understands nearly all I say to him. He is so smart and we just love him to bits. Since teaching him how to sit a couple months ago, any time he wants our attention, or if he thinks were upset with him, he will go in his crate and sit for us, because he knows it makes us happy! He has also been around both Andrew and my families and is great with kids and lots of people around. He loves attention. Sometimes he gets a little bothered by the kids constantly wanting to pet him, but he just turns his head away and lets them pet his back. My mom has two cats that I had to leave with her because Andrew is allergic to them, and Zooks likes them. They however, don't like him. They hide from him, and my kitten sees me, and immediately hides because she knows I always have the dog with me when I come to visit. He's so curious as to what they are and what they're doing, and they're just so scared of him! He would never hurt them though, I can tell by the way he approaches them. My mom has a cat that lives outdoors that she feeds because she doesn't know if it has a home and she feels bad, and just last week we were visiting and Zooks went up to see it, and put his face close to it to look, and it got mad and swatted at him! It didn't hurt him though, luckily. And he still isn't afraid of it!
I don't know if you remember, but when we adopted Zooks he had multiple intestinal parasites and worms, and all of that has cleared up well. We found a great vet to take care of him. He also cut his leg open on his crate many months ago, and that healed well too. He's quite accident prone, but we've learned to watch him more carefully so he hasn't hurt himself since the leg incident.
I start a full time job on May 1st, so we're a little concerned about how Zooks is going to react to being alone all day. He seems to be alright with Andrew being gone all day, but he might be upset without me here. If he gets a walk right before we leave, hes better, and hes also better if both of us don't leave at the same time. I hope he'll be ok. If not, I may try to find him a "babysitter" to come and check on him in the middle of the day once and take him for a quick walk. He's also adapted to his crate well. He didn't want to be in it at first, but now he goes in it all the time, and he has a great bed in it, and TONS of toys. He even has a toybox! We take him to Petsmart and let him pick out toys himself, and hes now learned to jump up to get the ones that are higher up! He's so funny when we take him there. He is such a great dog and he has made such a great difference in our lives.
We would like to adopt another greyhound one day soon. We're trying to decide when. We are moving to a bigger place in September, so that would be the earlier that we would get another grey. We really want one though, and the more I look at the pictures, the more I want one now!
I hope everyone and their Greys are doing well. Hopefully we can make it to some of the walks in Springbank park over the summer. I've been so insanely busy with classes and Andrew with his Masters project that we just don't have the time for much. Hopefully the summer gives us more time!
Take care everyone!
Becky (and Andrew) and Zooks!
