Thanks everyone. He has moved on from straight "statuing" to pulling back on the leash and whining trying to go back the way we had come. It is tends to happen as we turn towards home. We have tried turning him in a big circle but he has figured it out. Treats and standing firm in the direction we want to go works some of the time, but we have had to carry him home sometimes. We have a walk set up with a friend and we are hoping that a mentor will help!

I hope the friend works, sounds like you have your hands full. I don't know how you can lift him up. How long have you had him, because they seem to bond strongly and anywhere you go they will go,. He might still be bonding but once that he has watch out because then you can't even go to the bathroom without them.
We have a Mini Yorki in the neighborhood who has actually ran up and bitten my guy, he never wanted to go there again, but because I was in the lead he followed along. Kept his eyes peeled and very nervous, but he followed along.
Good luck maybe the friend is just what he needs.

We are still in very early days. We've only had him one week, so bonding and trusting is still the main goal. Things were a bit better yesterday and we are hopeful that this is the beginning of change but we will be patient and see.
