UPDATE: Murph was at the vet's on Tuesday where she (the vet) removed 2 more nails that were hanging...this was not an easy task which resulted in alot of yelping and a bandaged foot. The vet wanted to do a full investigation so I drew and ran some blood tests (I work in a lab). Liver = normal Cushings = negative CBC= normal (hopefully ruling out lymphoma - all his lymph glands are swollen) We are still waiting for the ANA results. ANA is a test for human lupus, but from what I have read about SLO (thanks for the info OntarioGreys) there is no blood test to confirm that diagnosis. Murph seems quite happy and well...the only sign that he is bothered by all of this is that he tries to pull the loose nails off himself. Murph goes back to the vet for bandage removal tomorrow...we will see what she says then...

Update: Murph has not lost any more nails. One of the nails that the vet pulled off still bleeds every time he goes for a walk though. The vet feels that Murph may have hypothyroidism. Apparently nails falling off/getting infected can be a secondary issue due to hypothyroidism. From what I have researched Murph's FT4 is low normal for a greyhound but the vet assures me the value is low even for a greyhound. The vet gave me thyroid meds for him but I have yet to start them...She wants me to medicate him for 3wks and do more blood work and reassess then. She did say that not all dogs with low values are truly hypothyroid. His ANA test result was negative but from what I read that doesn't really have any diagnostic value when it comes to SLO. Murph overall still seems like his happy ol' self...he is just a little bummed that he is being muzzled so often. Once his little booties that I have ordered from the internet come in he won't have to wear he muzzle anymore. Please keep on sending good thoughts Murph's way! Here he is before the vet took his bandage off last Saturday:
