Okay I am going to ask here before I call my vet (because I am a paranoid first time mom to a grey and the vet is probably sick of me). So two days ago after giving Ty another dewormer I found something in his poop which did not look like roundworm. Called the vet and took a small sample up to vet to be looked at was told just some mucus (possibly a result of dewomer). Now today Ty is dry coughing usually just after drinking. Then he started spitting up not vomiting but like he would burp and some clear spit type stuff would come out. No Big D, eating fine, sleeping a bit more than usual (but did not sleep well last night so thought it was just that). I am going to call vet tomorrow morning but just wanted your input. Thanks for your help. Tara

Sounds like my guys right now only they've both got the Big D and hookworms sadly. Not sure about the dry coughing though. The wet burps my guess would be just reacting to the meds...just a guess though. I hope he's ok and let us know.

Okay so last night he didn't sleep again and this morning has the Big D. He is eating normally. I should also say that when I described to the vet tech over the phone what these things looked like (in his stool) the other day before we took sample up she said it sounded like tapeworm. But vet couldn't find anything but what he thought was mucus. Tyson is really worrying me. This is his second round of dewormer in a month but I know that this one doesn't get rid of tapes. Should I demanded a dose of tapeworm dewormer. Should I also put him on a monthly dewormer like he is on a flea control? Thanks Tara

Did they also do a Gardia test which is separate from the run of the mill tests they do on fecal samples. Could it possibly be the food he's eating and that he has irritable bowel or an allergy to something in the food? I wouldn't do anything until you know for sure what's going on so wait for the test results and go back to ask the vet what they suggest you do. I hope he's doing better soon though. Poor guy...poor you! I can relate. I came home last night to my bedroom covered in poop I think from the meds she was given for the hookworm. Oh, perhaps you should give him a bland diet as well until things settle down - do the ground beef and rice or potatoes. Easy to disgest. Good luck.

Tapeworm needs Panacur to deworm. Usually two doses are given, the second a month after the first. They sometimes won't show up in the first sample brought to your vet. Have you seen any rice-looking pieces in his poo?
Worms can be hard to get rid of sometimes and may require multiple treatments.
The coughing and not sleeping would worry me. Has he been tested for Heartworm? If not, I think I would ask for it.

Going to vet today with another sample. I have found rice-like things in poo yesterday. This morning found one just sitting on his tail. He has been tested for giardia. Heartworm as well. It seems the coughing occurs after he eats (he is a gulper) or drinks (water dish on floor). Could this be what is causing this? Last night the sleeping was better but I had to sleep in my daughter's room. He slept fine once I was there. Thanks for your help. Tara

Okay so been to vet and Ty has tapeworm for sure and has already had his meds. So hopefully this will end his trouble. I ask the vet about the coughing, was told that it could be eating habit related. Do heartworms always show up in the first test? Will keep an eye on it. My husband and the vet (yesterday when he went in to pay the bill) were joking about how paranoid I am. Yet everytime I say there is something out of the ordinary there is. I am a bit paranoid but I know my puppers. Thanks for all your help. Tara

Trust me, people will make fun of your paranoia, but it could save your dogs life.
I know Bill thinks my paranoia is funny. I used to tell him anytime Icarus had a problem. I've gotten better and learned to treat a lot of little things myself (cuts/scrapes/diarrhea/upset tummy).
I believe heartworms do show up on the test. My vet only tests for HW once a year just before putting them on their preventative (usually in April or May).

The coughing could also be if his teeth are bad. Kiki does it and my vet said that it's because of "stuff" (whatever that is) could be draining and going into his throat which makes him cough. We're getting a dental done very soon!

My boy does the coughing up a nd spitting as well usually after drinking or eating in a hurry. He's been doing it for the 6 years we've had him. Use to think it was the lump on his neck causing it had it removed and still does it.

Hi Tara, I would raise his water dish off of the floor. It seems to be best for large breed dogs. It is easier for them to drink that way. Just a suggestion. Liz (water dish on floor). Could this be what is causing this? Tara

Are you wetting the kibble before you feed? A lot of greys have trouble eating dry kibble and will and spit it out. Possibly from being intubated which caused irritation to the esophagus while under for neuter and dental (not sure how long ago that was) or swallowing something he should not have. Other possibility Megaesophagus, which I would not rush out an test for (since he is not actually throwing up food ), some info here on www.geocities.com/bailey_chair/ which includes a link to this site www.marvistavet.com/html/body_megaesophagus.html which has some explanations as why it can occur. But mentioning incase it progresses to vomiting of food and water, which likely would be extremely unlikely, but just making you aware of helpful info just in case There was a greyhound named Soda from greytalk who almost died from it and spent some tome hospitalized because hold not hold down food or water he is shown in his feeding chair(in first link provided under "click here to see pictures of dogs using the Bailey chair"

Thanks everyone for your input. My vet also thinks it is probably eating/drinking habit related so he suggested raising the water dish and lowering the food dish (right now it sits at about 14 inches off floor) So hubby is making a stand for his dishes. Tara Sorry had to modify, I forgot to say that Ty seems to be better today (Big D gone not so tired and slept through the night last night)
