I've read that the general rule is that you can slide a credit card under each nail when they're standing still then they are at a good length. I like to keep my guys just a tad shorter... but it's really personal preference.
I like to see the nails short enough that they don't interfere with the dog's gait. I've seen nails so long (on people's pets) that the dog has to turn it's feet or walk awkwardly in order to walk comfortably. I don't understand how one can ignore that.

kjw that's the style of clippers I use on all of my animals (including the bird... yes teensy tiny little wee clippers for the stoopid bird). I'm still terrified to cut Ava's nails myself. Not quite sure why. She only has two black nails, but her nails are all talons and look awful. I'll pay $15 to get the vet to do them again and then maybe I can work on maintenance.

I'm with you on this! I'm not sure why either. I bought the clippers - both kinds - and the pet nail dremel - all of which I have given away because after one feeble attempt with each, I'm afraid to do it myself. I am thinking of trying the clippers that Karen recommends, but still not sure I'll be able to actually use them!

I've been using the grinding tool for a little over two years... ever since an unfortunate incident. I had the tool, I may as well train us. Emily's just now getting used to the idea of our weekly tirade. I've got it down to about 30 minutes and I'm sweating buckets! It does look pretty. I wish her quick would recede more. I have tried a three day regimen but I'm back to weekly. I'm jealous of Dober Dawn, though I'm not sure what conformation is for Grey nails. I will just come out and say it: long nails are gross! I can't help but cringe when I see a dog's nails so long they make its foot look deformed. BTW, that applies to humans, too!

It depends on hat the dogs like, some are scared of the loud snapping noises of traditional clippers, and others find the whirring noise of dremel tools scary.
