Our beautiful little girl is gone. The trip to the vet was a nightmare - she was in such pain in spite of metacam. They gave her morphine and took x-rays and found 3 herniated discs in her lower back. They sent us to Guelph (well medicated) to consult on back surgery. She was barely alive by the time we got there, low blood pressure and heart rate. It took aggressive treatment to stabilize her enough do a neurological assessment. They felt the discs were not the source of her pain but suspected a cancer in her spine (although not visible on the x-rays.) They were going to do the necessary tests in the morning, but even with aggressive treatment she was deteriorating rapidly and might not have made it through the night. The decision to euthanize was very hard.
Jana came into our lives because I did not follow Bill's recommendation. He knew we are into dog sports and had picked out another dog for us. My head said he was right, but Jana took our hearts. She was a very sweet but shy girl. She went to obedience class where she was a "difficult" student, but once she decided to do something we asked it was never a problem again. The real turning point was when we took her to Camp Dogwould where they had some simple lure coursing. She was a different dog after that. She took on agility classes next and really liked doing it. Jana had a novice title in obedience and rally obedience. She would have had a title in agility because she ran clean, except that Momma made mistakes. In trials she was either brilliant or entertaining. She took part in a lot of parades and even had her picture taken for the paper on Canada Day holding the Canadian flag in her mouth. Jana warmed a lot of lonely hearts through her ministry to seniors as a pet therapist. At home she had attitude and was our alpha dog. No one else was allowed up onto our bed. She also possessed a $1200.00 toe and a $400.00 tail. She was very accident prone, probably because she was always in a hurry.
