CORA
FEB. 11, 2006 – AUG 07, 2016
Cora has left us to cross the bridge and be with her big sister Bella. Sorry this took so long but we’re a bit out of sort here lately.
We were introduced to Cora (Winter Blaze) on Good Friday in 2010. We went to drop off some supplies at the kennel and she had just come in the night before with 5 others and wasn’t even up on the site yet. We went back on Easter Monday to take her for a walk and see how she did with our other 2 pups Oreo and Bella. It was a match that was meant to be and we brought her home the following Sunday.
When Cora first arrived we could tell someone had not been kind to her in the past. She was timid, shy and nervous. She wouldn’t eat if I was in the same room, that changed in time. She wouldn’t take a treat from me. I had to put it on her cushy in front of her. Later she would come to me a take it from my hand and sometimes with a little force. She would cry out and drop to all 4’s if we scratched her ears or grabbed her collar. Through many months of petting her back and neck, working my way to her ears and back to her neck, we slowly gained her trust. Years later she enjoyed a good ear scratch and neck massage.
Cora learned to do stairs in 5 minutes of arriving at her new home and never had a problem after. Within a week of coming to us she could open the patio screen door herself without damaging it to let herself in from outside. I could never show her how to close it so she just left it open and headed for a cushy.
Cora was known at the GRA picnics as the dog who gave the hugs. There’s many pictures of her hugging another hound. She loved them all, and loved the picnics. She looked forward to them every year.
In November 2014, I let her out late at night before she went to bed and there was a rabbit in the back yard. Let’s just say after all her races and chasing a mechanical rabbit, all that training paid off when she proudly brought her prize to me.
Cora came from Florida and has 14 wins to her credit. I have some of those videos saved that I still watch sometimes. She always made us proud.
Cora’s name started out Corona because of her colours. We shortened it and she had many after. Coco, Coco Chanel, Cora-Cora, Coconuts, and the usual Sweetheart and Beautiful Girl
I miss her meeting me in the hallway when I got going in the morning. She would rub her head against my leg and nuzzle it as I petted her side. She would come to me and I would open my hands to scratch the bottom of her neck. Her head would get heavy as she stood enjoying the massage and attention.
In the 6 plus years we were together, I never had to scold her once. She was the perfect lady. She should be the ambassador to all greyhounds. With her brother Oreo and sister Bristol still here, the house feels empty without her. Her spirit was that large that she filled an entire house.
I will never forget you my beautiful girl. You have left paw prints on my heart that will never go away. Run free at the bridge with big sister Bella and the other greyhound angels. You will live forever in my heart.
Cora through the years.
Nervous at first but that changed in time.
On our way to the big park to see some deer.
Always showing off her bling and trying to be the best dressed at the picnic.
I don't know if she enjoyed getting older but she sure loved a bday cookie.
Ready for the cooler winter nights.
So happy at the picnics. Look at her smile.
Showing her little brother Oreo some love.
Hugging her sister Bristol at the picnic.
I love this picture of Cora looking radiant in her Stella and Dot bling.
I love you my beautiful girl. We will be together again one day.
